Actually, from what they have shown rock and purple Pikmin are very different. Rock Pikmin seem to be used to break down the new glass barriers and glass exoskeletons on certain enemies but when thrown they don't seem to stun enemies like Purples. Also there hasn't been any hints that rock Pikmin have the strength that purple Pikmin have. Purple and whites are probably still in this game. It would be silly to leave them out.
