The experiment is paying off. Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, says digital downloads are fast becoming a notable contributor to the company's bottom line - and he expects the trend to continue its rapid rise.

"We have 15 Nintendo-published titles available, both physically and digitally [on the 3DS]," he says. "So far in 2013, of those 15 available in this format, 11 percent of sales have come through full digital downloads of those games."

The numbers get more impressive with some individual titles. Fils-Aime says Fire Emblem Awakening has sold 240,000 units life-to-date in the US - with one-third of those in digital form.

My internet is too terrible to experience this. When I had my 360 its took over 7 hours to download Bioshock 2!

I think it's clear that a lot of the FE:A digital sales came from the retail shortages. But as for regular digital sales, they seem pretty good.

Maybe Fire Emblem not making it to stores on time was a conspiracy to make the eshop version more attractive.

Why do you say that, I think they're awesome for RPGs, especially because of being able to put it in standby.

Im guessing their sales of the digital versions of retails are up because they don't have enough physical copies to go around, Fire Emblem was the first, now Luigi's Mansion is harder to find compared to Fire Emblem and i still don't have my damn copy, I respect the digital copies but there are collectors out there like myself that love collecting physical games with the cover and manual to show what kind of games you have than go to your system and check there. My gamecube collection looks badass.

Perhaps such confidence will push Activision into making a deal, finally. Until consumers see BO2 and other Activision titles as digital downloads for the Wii U's Eshop, there is no real hope for BO2's map packs.

I definitely prefer having a physical copy, but whatever gets the game to sell so people can enjoy it, I'm glad. The 3DS really does have a lot of great games.
