funny to me now that there are reports of the Wii U dev kits having problems... why you might ask because of Nintendo using CHEAP PARTS! so i guess it is what it is.

Funny to me how those are rumors, shouldn't be taken as fact, and that nothing is known about the exact specs of the Wii U, and you can't call them cheap parts just because it doesn't have a DVD PLAYER.

I wouldn't put any stock in those rumors. The team behind Darksiders 2 have stated that they have no problem with their dev kit, and that they were able to port Darksiders 2 to the Wii U in just 5 weeks with a team of 3 developers. That also includes programing compatibility with new functions made available by the Wii U's controller. I think I'll listen to developers rather than a rumor mongering website who manged to hit it lucky in the past.

Just thought I would point out, the Wii can read DVDs. Nintendo just never created software to read DVD movies. :P

Has nothing to do with a dvd player. never said they were fact! just saying there is a rumor out that nintendo is using cheap parts. i find it ironic!

the problem has nothing to do with getting the game up and running on the console. ithe rumor said nintendo was cutting corners with the components inside of the remote... aka being cheap.

DVD movie software is in the Wii. However, it was locked off before distribution. I'm not condoning homebrew or anything, but it is possible to watch DVD's of a Wii.

That was a long time ago. The developers were using unfinished and underclocked kits. If you were talking about the 001.net rumor, the problems stem from the controller, not the overall hardware! It's still going through prototype phases and we are still eons away from its projected release! Besides, all consoles use relatively cheap and outdated hardware, anyway. The Xbox 360's and PS3's hardware used 5-6 year old graphics cards. Like I mentioned before, switch to PC if you're so damned concerned about tech!

You're whole problem here is "the rumor" as it's A RUMOR. NOT FACT. I almost find it sad at how ready you are for Nintendo to fail. o_o

But TRON, that's what happens with rumours. No one likes them except haters because they are rumours. It's not just Nintendo fans dude. You'd be surprised by how many Sony and Microsoft fanboys I know who get pissed off about people bagging out Nintendo, especially when it comes to rumours.

That's why everyone should look at rumors just as "rumours" and nothing else... (Like some people.)

Forget the rumors.... lets talk about the my first question. I asked a question which i thought had facts to back it up. we know nintendo made billions off the Wii. so can they not afford to put more up to date tech into their console. i was just posing a question and every nintendo fan on here took it as a personal attack on them. open up your mind people!

It's not about putting up to date tech into a system, but having a system that can perform what it's supposed to.

*cough* Wii U is better than PS360 *cough*

They can do that, but they won't do it because it would make the Wii U a lot more pricy.

In a way, I agree with you, Thread Starter, but like most people have said here, I don't mind nor do I think it's a deal breaker. All that said, including DVD playback does imply an increase in price. Not because of Hardware costs (it could cost Nintendo ZERO to have the capabilities) but because of licensing fees. Granted, it's not too much of a price to pay, but not having it helps keep the cost of the unit low. Seeing how things went with the 3DS, I believe Nintendo will go this route in order to keep the console "affordable" and to sell it at a profit in the event of a necessary price cut a few months after launch day.

Yeah... I'm with TRON in his disappointment that Nintendo did not push for better tech. HOWEVER, I get Nintendo's reasoning for not doing so.

Cutting edge tech would make the system very pricey, and Nintendo knows that it can't push its luck with the market (especially after losing the confidence of so many gamers and developers with the Wii). Better tech means even longer development cycles for the developers that even bother to take advantage of the hardware (and many won't take advantage of it for many years), and even selling hardware at a huge loss, I doubt that many gamers are ready to pay the $600-$800 that Nintendo would have to sell the console for.

The cost/benefit curve just drops off so steeply after a certain point... it would be hard to maintain a solvent business model selling consoles that offer marginally better partical/lighting effects and reflection mapping than a PS3, but for more than twice the price. You and I might take the plunge, but I'm guessing (from the sales data on high-end graphics cards, if nothing else) that not many others will.

This is merely Nintendo creating console hardware based on the same principles that went into the creation of practically every console ever made. Individuals forget or simply don't realize that using the latest tech has never been within the equation of creating console hardware before the Xbox 360 and PS3. The tech behind consoles in the past was old by time the consoles hit the market often by several years. The gap on the age of the technology within a console has steadily decreased since the Nintendo Entertainment System, but still for instance the age of the GPU technology rumored to be used in the Wii U is rather equivalent with what we saw in the previous generation of consoles at launch.

This isn't anything really to be worried about itself neither Sony nor Microsoft are likely to use bleeding edge tech in their consoles though certainly more up to date than Nintendo. How far behind the capability of Nintendo's Wii U is to their competition really depends on what sort of memory they use, clock speeds, amount of customization, ext. Technical issues will greatly limit the capability of consoles this coming generation primarily because of high wattage from chipsets. I certainly expect Sony and Microsoft to have an edge regarding power, but it isn't going to be anything like the Wii in regards to the Xbox 360 or PS3.

I don't think their being cheap at all. As for the DVD player, Nintendo probably figured that enough people already have DVD players that it isn't necessary for Wii U. As for the tech specs, third party developers already said it's a step up from last generation. So I'm not worried one bit about Nintendo being cheap.
