Brawl's overhauled engine is considerably slower and not optimized for tournament play, which I look for in a fighting game.
Kart's item balancing is completely broken.

... I did not notice that. Nor do I still notice them. But just because of this, that doesn't mean they're officially HUGE letdowns.

Cant decide! Both are great! Both of those are my most favorite for their franchises. That will most likely change with MK7/ SSB4 though. Brawl's my fav Smash because I just think its overall funner and better than melee. It's easier to control, and easier to do a lot of things. Like the auto grab edge, I really like that, it was terrible in melee when I tried to grab an edge and didnt, plus melee just feels "meh" to me. I only play melee every now and then just for the nostalgia, but I feel Brawl is the better game. The only people that I know who complain about Brawl are "tourneyogres" &/ or "nostalgiaogres". MKWii's my fav Mario Kart so far because of all the new things like tricks, the awesome online, time trials worth doing, fun items. The people that I know who complain about MKWii are basically the same type of people that complain about Brawl. MK has always been un balanced, and honestly if you're really good you can still get 1st place even if you get his with a dozen blue shells (with some exceptions).
