Let's see... .gifs. Let's see some size comparisons. :D

This 60x60 sprite I've recolored is 4.46kb.

Um... Okay, how are people's .gifs getting so high? 300kb definitely seems unnecessary. 

Edit: Decided to see sizes of anime .gifs floating on the web. Warning for uh... PDA?

 

128x128 = 68.2kb

Indeed Ixchel.
Also something a lot of people overlook is gif's ability to use a selective palette.
You don't need 9001 colours if all you're using is blue, red, and pink in the image.

I don't see the problem with having images this big as avatars:

Resized it to about 100x100 and cut the colors in half. For some reason the original is not actually a square image.

1MB and minimum size of 300x400 pixels, maximum of 1000x1000

May as well encourage laziness and annoying massive flashing images everywhere on the board to slow down every page load.

Seeing how there isn't too much support for an increase in avatar file size, I will leave it as it is right now.  Increasing the file size will not increase the dimensions, though, and I think the dimension size should remain as it is.
