Why do you think 3d world only runs in 720p upscaled to 1080p?

I cant believe how awesome the Wii U games look. I haven't been a Nintendo fan since SNES, but I bought a Wii U on a whim. I never liked the original Wii but I am hooked on the Wii U.

I love the New super Mario bros U + Luigi U, and im hyped for the new 3D Mario coming out in just over a week. (yeah im 32 and hyped for Mario) I even used EB games credit to buy the Mario and luigi Wii remote plus controllers!

Cant wait to play the new Mario kart, smash bros, bayonetta, and donkey kong. Also hoping for a new Star Fox one day. I've never played any Zelda games other than on the NES and my buddy gave me his Windwaker HD code so im looking forward to playing it.

ANyway long story short, I'm loving  the Wii U (minus lack of library) right now.

Same here! 36 years old and loving it. My kids do too. I don't know if Mario 3d is 720 or 1080 but it looks great. WWHD has the best graphics I have ever seen it's beautiful to watch and a great game also. I was a massive fan of Star Fox on the Snes and I would be happy with a N64 Star Fox on the VC for now as I never played that either.

Glad you like it as well. I cant wait to play Bayonetta 2. Though the thing with the Wii U is that there is such a long wait between game releases that I play it for a bit, then put it away for months and play PC or xbox 360 instead.

Wii U isn't a console I bought to play multiplatform titles on , so when a game like assassins creed or call of duty come out on it , its like "so what? wheres Mario or donkey kong? "

I still haven't finished any of my games, except for Lego city and Scribblenaughts.

I think smash, MH3U, and NFS:MW run in 1080p 60fps, and that's probably the most graphical intense games for the wii U. 3D world shouldn't be that hard to run in 1080p really.

Smash graphically intense? Not really tbh. Graphics dissapoint to me.

Im actually in the same boat. I dont understand why every level they have shown is ripped straight, original geometry and all, from wii games. I am actually far more interested in the 3ds version as of right now...

Maybe we will be a bit more impressed when they release a new trailer... kind of like SM3D World.

Racers and fighters generally run at higher resolutions & framerates because their environments are very contained - GT4 managed 1080i on the PS2 years ago. Once you get outside the area that the camera allows you to see, the detail level drops sharply 3D World has much larger environments, so it makes sense to set the resolution lower to keep the framerate up. If you look in some of the preview videos on the eshop, there are some very noticeable drops in framerate so I'm sure Nintendo wanted to minimize that as much as possible.

I suspect that Wii U games' resolutions will generally be similar to that of the PS3/Xbox 360: ports of older games, arcade titles and 2D games might hit 1080p, but most will be upscaled 720p.

Thats not necessarily always the case, certainly not anymore, and particularly with mk8's track design, where you can race on the underside of tracks at whim, showcasing the entire track layout, and everyone else racing, beneath you.... That throwh those  overhead advantadges typical of racers, right out the window.

Many mk8 tracks Ive seen completely dwarf any level ive seen in 3dworld, and ive seen several of the 'big ones' in world. 3dworld is a slick looking game, but it absolutely screams tiny team and tiny budget... It is very clear that mk8's budget, is among the largest for any shown wii u game Nintendo has shown, and blows 3dworlds budget away.

Well yeah, 3D World does seem to have a small budget. It's still using many of 3D Land's assets and is obviously using the same engine etc., but the game is still a great game thanks to brilliant level design.

Mario Kart 8 is looks like it's using a new engine, new assets, new tracks (with added anti-gravity sections) and many more new things. It's a new game from scratch. And there aren't that many Nintendo games on the Wii U so far that have been from scratch.

NSMBU was just the same stuff with new levels, in HD. Pikmin 3, while a great game, was using lots of assets and the same engine as previous games (although changed a lot) and it was a Wii game originally. Super Smash Bros. looks similar to Brawl, I'm not sure if it's from scratch but IMO it doesn't look it. Wii Fit U is still using the same engine and the same Miis etc.. Wii Party U is the same story. WWHD is still a gamecube game (but a lot of it has been changed/updated for the Wii U).

Really the only (completely) new games on the system are NintendoLand and WarioWare, with Mario Kart 8 and X coming in the future.

I think this might be due to them still getting used to HD development, they simply didn't have time to create new games without borrowing from previous instalments in the series'.

Meh, I'm not annoyed that they're reusing things from previous games, as long as the games they're producing still feel fun and not boring (When SM3DW was announced at E3 I was a bit scared they were gonna start releasing games that were super similar, but that's obviously not the case now that we all know more about the game).

TL;DR

Nintendo wins.

Goes to show you that a GREAT GAME doesn't necessarily require a bloated budget.

It just needs talent, experienced and passionate people who care.

Indeed, many of the best games recently have had small budgets. Games like Journey and Mario 3D World are prime examples.

Also, 3D Mario games just have this way of making you love them. They give you the nicest feeling when you play them. They don't need massive budgets.

MK8 does look pretty awesome. I think Mario 3D world will pretty much dominate our family Xmas though. I can't wait to have a go on Xmas morning when my lad gets it ;)

Whatever, the game looks fantastic and Wii U has quite a few 60fps 1080p games out now and coming soon unlike Xbone which is supposed to be "next gen" and can't even run a stripped down version of Ryse in 1080p.

That's not a fair comparison. I very much doubt a game like Ryse could run in 1080p on the Wii U. Besides the Wii U has been out for a year already and the Xbox One has just launched. Not to mention its been well documented that even Nintendo is having trouble developing HD quality games for the Wii U. Also Ryse even in its current form looks far better them most Wii U games.

After watching that footage again, either the game has a very good anti aliasing or it really is 1080p. I'm betting on the latter.

It's ironic that the Wii U has the most 1080p60 games than the other next gen systems (PS4 and Xbox One), despite being the "weaker" system.

Not really ironic considering the Wii U has been out longer and most of those 1080p games judging by the art style aren't as taxing on the system. Again not a fair comparison.

At this is what I love... People judging the quality of graphics in Nintendo games early. Nintendo has a certain way of developing games. Upping the visuals quality of their games is the LAST thing they do. Piikmin 3, 3Dworld, and others have shown this. It will look a lot better closer to release.

Eh, that doesnt really apply here, because what we are talking about is Nintendo's decision to use wii game assets, original geometry and textures, as nearly the only levels they have shown for smash bros.

It seems to be a theme, as the 3ds version is using level assets pulled straight from ds games. Original ds assets.

So, since they are purposefully using these old assets, they arent going to be 'polished' or look any better than what they look like right now, as they have been finished since the release of their original wii game they were used in.... What Nintendo NEEDS to do, is stop showing off levels that are taken, unmodified, from original wii games.

So far, the best looking level is the pyrosphere, which is, polygon for polygon, and texture for texture, taken directly from other m.

But things like the character models look great. They actually appear to be quite sophisticated. Their clothes even appear to be demonstrating a degree of fidelity I havent seen from any title yet. Not just cloth physics, like capes, or scarfs, or any of that stuff. Thats been standard for a very long time. But it appears the loose clothing bunched up, as in wrinkles in fabric are animated, and not an animated texture/normal map, but proceduraly at the vertex level, possibly subdivided... (its hard to tell from still screens, but what is apparant is the wrinkles are not static, they move between different character poses, and are actually rendered polygons, not textures), its actually polygons.

Its just they stick out like a sore thumb next to all the wii geometry and textures.

Probably to stop slow downs n frame drops at high points.

Also most people can't tell upscale from true 1080.

Really? And COD Ghosts on Xbone is a VERY demanding game right?.... in 720p.
