So Rayman Legends has been out in Japan for a week now, and sales figures aren't looking good for it so far, selling less than 1,500 copies. That's only a bit over 200 a day.

Well, Rayman Origins sold 2.127 (vgchartz.com numbers) at launch on PS3, April last year.

It`s not the lack of userbase, just the lack of interest.

Isn't Rayman always doing bad in Asian countries?

Anyway, sad to see they don't have any interest in it.

Plus the Japanese sales don't include digital downloads in the chart.

Yea, its not really that big of a surprise.  Rayman isnt a very big game there, or anywhere really.  Honestly I feel like Ubisoft had very little expectations for the Wii U build of Rayman Legends.  My local supermarket had a few copies of Rayman Legends at launch, sold out, and havent been restocked.  I think they shipped very low quantities to retailers.  I think Legends is selling about what Ubisoft expected on Wii U, but is tanking on the other two consoles.  They had to expect better on two consoles with a userbase of 150 million people.

And because of that i doubt we will see another Rayman game in the style of Origins and Legends.
The install base grew yet sales didn`t.

If I recall correctly, Rayman Origins actually didn't start selling well until it dropped to the $30-40 range, so maybe the same will happen here.

No, the games are so cheep to make that their goal is around 100,000 to profit.

Well Origins did sell over a million copies at that point, Legends is sitting at about 250k and is slowing to a crawl.  They need to drop the price to $40 before Christmas and maybe do some eshop sales.  If they keep it on store shelves it will start to pick back up once its a $20 title, but that's where the mass market values the majority of 2D platformers.

Don`t know if they are cheap to make, but breaking even or profiting is just one the points to look at.
Did or will Legends grow it`s fanbase? That`s an important aspect to look at. Why invest on a franchise that cannot pass past a point and even carries the risk of decreasing it?
And it`s not just about how much money is spent vs earned, but balancing human resources between projects.

Even if it can make the same numbers as Origins, it did "less" on a increased HW userbase - in the case of PS3 and Xbox 360.

I doubt Ubisoft will push forward with Rayman.  Maybe they will do a small scale project for phones and tablets, but its doubtful they will fund another console release.  As bad as selling 1500 copies of Rayman Legends is, thats still $28 in profit per copy sold, so $42,000 in profit.  Im sure its going to continue to sell, but as you can see, even if it only sells 10k in Japan, thats still $280,000 in profit.  Combine that with the 250k sold elsewhere, we are looking at over 7 million dollars in profit already.  Did they give this game more than a 10 million dollar budget?  I kind of doubt that.  Rayman Legends will turn a profit, but it wont be very large.

Not too surprising, Rayman is the kind of game that starts selling more over time with price drops. Also there's the fact that it's a Wii U exclusive in Japan, which drags down the sales further.
