According to an unconfirmed Nikkei report, Nintendo plans to release trailers for new games on smartphones (presumably Android and iOS) as well as "free mini-games." Until now, Nintendo hasn't made any gaming content available on smartphones.

Note that the Nikkei does not use the Japanese word for "demo," which is either "taikenban" (体験版) or "demo" (デモ). It explicitly states "muryou no mini geemu" (無料のミニゲーム) or "free mini-game." Nikkei reports that the idea is that if players enjoy the mini-games, they can purchase the actual software for their Nintendo hardware. That sounds awfully like a demo!

Nintendo will apparently make a wide swath of information about its games available via smartphones—such as introducing the game's story and characters as well as the release date and price.

Nintendo is expected to announce this plan later this week, Nikkei adds.

This statement is false. The previous statement is true.

RIP in peace Nintendo.

So what your saying is your get video trailers on your phone like YouTube. And probably a game thy has nothing to do with the game being release.

Nintendo Direct App and some mini-game selections from wii party u etc.
And I thought their marketing teams were all burned to death in some kind of fire before the Wii U was launched.

From what this looks like, they will be releasing demo's or trials, maybe even parts of full games...probably to get people who don't own a Wii U to think about it

I called it. These won't be full games like Zelda or Mario Bros, but very small games (Like the original "Yoshi" game, maybe Dr. Mario, and maybe even WarioWare 3 second task game)

This is going to back fire horribly.

The problem with this, is that even Nintendo's free minigames and fractions of software experiences have infinitely more value than the garbage and smut tht passes for 'gaming' on cell phones. So these people will just play the free mini games, and never move on.

That's the main problem I can see them having. Smartphone gamers are happy playing a game like Candy Crush, they'll be even happier playing a Nintendo game, even if it's just a demo... They won't see the need to moving on the actual Nintendo consoles. :/

I'm more inclined to believe that if there is some truth behind this rumour, that the platform is actually the 3DS, not smartphones.

We all know the 3DS is selling like hotcakes, but the Wii U isn't. It should only be natural that Nintendo try to get the numbers of both equalised, at least, I'd like to think that for every 3DS user there is a Wii U.

Then again, this is the Japanese audience that's being targeted. And well, they are known for eating up things that a Western audience doesn't.

Maybe Nintendo could put a limit on how many uses, like they do with the Nintendo eShop demos?

I knew this was a load of waffle when I read it on Gamestop earlier. If Nintendo were to do this they would start putting the nails in the coffin of their handheld systems business sector.

Nintendo have previously denied rumours from Nikkei that they soon after announced to be true. Such as the release of a larger 3DS. So I wouldn't take Nintendo's word on this yet.

Depending on how it is approached it could very well be a very good marketing tool for Nintendo systems but it's something Nintendo hasn't done before so how they will approach it is very much a mystery.
