Didn`t expect a Smash Direct before one for MK 8. My guess, Smash is coming late June or July.

I agree, I don't think we'd be getting a "smash bros. direct" this soon if it wasn't coming out until November/December.

 

Nintendo should release this over summer so then the holiday slot is free for Zelda U.

First they'll announce that it'll come out in time for the holiday season. Then they'll delay it till February of 2015 and again till March of that year.

This was my thought as well. If they're having an entire direct focused only on Smash then there has to be something big, something significant, that they want to announce. It has to be more than just a singular character announcement, and a release date would be direct worthy. We know that Sakurai started working on Smash as soon as he was done with Kid Icarus, which was about two years ago. We also know that they outsourced for additional help to get this game out faster, so it's definitely possibly we could see a release sooner rather than later.

 

Plus if they do have a release date to announce, it'd only make sense that it would either be before or close to E3. Otherwise, if the game was coming out during the holidays then they would most likely hold that date for E3. Of course, this is all speculation that they're going to have a date in the direct. There's no guarantee they will, but I can't quite see what else would justify a whole direct focused on one game.

I think a release date is a given.
August is a possibility. But if Iwata really wants to create momentum for Wii U, they better hurry the game and not save it for Christmas.

Seems soon, but Nintendo said they wanted to use the release of MK8 to create momentum for Wii U. Also, everytime NIntendo does a ND for a specific game, the release date isn`t far away.
