Shadows in the middle Rubik cube could use some work, though, as they tend to have soft edges

Cinema 4D R13 Prime (cheapest version) costs 995 dollars. If that is too much try the demo or download the free 3D application Blender which Waller uses.

Yes of course you can. I find blender harder than C4D though. But blender is a full fledge 3D software so you can basically create anything with it.
Remember it's not the tool but the artist that makes the final image good as long as the tool supports the artist.
