Really, thats the first ive heard of that. Would love to take a look at the two, except, well, I cant because noa are butt sniffers. If I saw it, it might go aways to making me not feel so bad about being forced to get the new xl and its horrible 92 ppi screen.

 

Its definitely there and we can rule out me having a defective n3ds because the first one had stuck pixels so I got it replaced, both had/have the motion trail.
Maybe because the XL's pixels are spaced further apart its not noticeable? Im positive its just a higher motion rate screen though.

 

 

Word has it that the new 3DS XL's top screen is an IPS display (lower screen the same), apparently the n3ds top screen is same as before. So the big change is the top screen only on the new 3ds XL model.

Makes sense since n3ds has what looks a edge lit top screen if turn it at an angle and IPS would confirm why new XL has much better viewing angles and a back lit display.

Kind of annoyed why Nintendo didn't match the quality of screen tech for the smaller version.

Great eyes bruh, you were the first person I saw ever mention this difference, before I saw this article, wish I had a chance to see the difference for myself, but it definately makes me feel better.

Quite a few people on Reddit have reported a twist in the tale, looks like not all new XL's have IPS with some being TN like the old XL but there is a test you can do yourself to find out.

Go in a dark room and on your 3ds turn OFF 3d and keep power saving/auto brightness OFF too.
Brightness level at 5.
Now open the consoles browser and type in www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php

Use the circle pad to scroll down so that the black squares appear in the top screen, my unit is IPS because the lowest number square I see is 8.
If you can see square 4 and up you have the TN panel.

All 3ds have TN panels in the bottom screen so you should see squares 4 and up if you scroll down the page.

It also means that an awful lot of people bought a New3DS just for the sake of the shiny new hardware (as I think they'd said over a million had been sold already). Which you might argue is a bit of a sad fact.
