According to the account of this Linkedin account Mark Atkinson is now working as a consultant software engineer at Nintendo. If you wonder why this is a big deal, you should take a look at his resume.
Consultant Software Engineer
Nintendo
September 2011 – Present (6 months)
Engine Optimisation Specialist
Lionhead Studios
April 2010 – April 2011 (1 year 1 month)
Consultant Software Engineer
Ignition London
February 2010 – April 2010 (3 months)
Director of Technology
Crytek
November 2008 – February 2010 (1 year 4 months)
He has worked in companies that have worked on HD games, noticeably Crytek. This clearly shows that Nintendo are working hard on making HD games for there system is not too much of a burden on them. He also will be able to give nintendo some input into the design of the machine as he has worked with other companies that have created games on the other consoles and PC.
What do you think of the news.

Lot? Dont you mean all. They all grew up with mario and link and now they want to help be in the big NYes! People have to realize there are lots of developers that are Nintendo fans. More so they want to see beautiful, graphically intense, hardcore games on Nintendo hardware. Marks my words right here. We are gonna see a lot of Wii U exclusives.
ON TOPIC THOUGH: nintendo is going all out

These people will make advanced wars for the wii u
I wonder if now that we have a controller that seems very practical for an Advance Wars type game, Nintendo might actually make a proper entry in the AW series for consoles? Battalion Wars is cool and all, but having a proper Wii U Advance Wars would be amazing.

I'd say it's more prudent to believe Nintendo are getting him to help optimise an engine for the Wii U or 3DS, rather than getting him to make a HD game.If you wonder why this is a big deal, you should take a look at his resume.

I don't see how graphics comes into his resume, it says he's a programmer, not a graphic artist.
Contrary, it does say he was an engine optimisation specialist.
Engines would be used as a base to make multiple new games.
Take the New Super Mario Bros. Wii game, it was obviously the base for Donkey Kong returns, and both kirby games.

Before Advance Wars there was Famicom Wars (which only came out in Japan), Game Boy Wars and SFW, and there's nothing wrong with BW, infact, the Wii U's 2 screens could make it better as an RTS than ever.
