I've never played a Final Fantasy game before, but am interested in the series. I am led to believe that the series doesn't have recurring characters or an overarching plot, so I would like to play a good one that would introduce me to the series well first.
I am here to ask Final Fantasy fans, where do I start?
I own most nintendo consoles, and have access to the virtual console. I do not have a playstation or Xbox system, and am not willing to get one. I'm not willing to download any illegally online using an emulator.

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest was made to introduce new players to turn-based RPGs. It is for SNES. It's simple and quick and has amazing battle music. You are kinda limited yourself to the better FFs by not having a PS1 because the more golden ones are on that.

I wouldn't jump into FF6 immediately. It is very good but I suggest Mystic Quest first.

It's really your call...lots of good ones...I'd start with 6, 7, 9, or 10. All my personal favorites.

7 is the best IMO, I started with that one.

I started with 7, played 9, never owned or played 8 so I missed out on that, played 10, owned but never played 12 despite enjoying tactic advance. I think I'm the only one that enjoyed 13, didn't play 13-2 however.

Didn't miss out on much. I started with 7 as well but, I hated 8 and 12...I like tactics advance too, but 12 didn't cut it for me.

I still want to give FF8, FF12 and FF13-2 a go. FF13-2 is pretty cheap now, might just pick that up.

You hated 8? May I ask why? D:

SUGGESTIONS FOR WHICH GAME TO START OUT WITH:

FF 6 (VI) is my favorite, but I don't suggest you start there. I suggest you start with FF 3 (III) or FF 4 (IV) and then work your way up. You gain an appreciate for the depths of these games, which are often overlooked completely.

I never liked the Junction System.... but I told myself all these years later to go through it again.

I know that Final Fantasy I-VI are available on the Game Boy Advance, Final Fantasy I-III are available on the Wii Virtual Console and Final Fantasy III and IV have been remade on the DS. I started with Final Fantasy III on the DS and then played Final Fantasy IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XII and XIII on Playstation consoles. If you have at least two GBAs and an equal number of GBA to Gamecube link cables and know someone else who likes RPGs I think Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles on the Gamecube is also a very good Final Fantasy spin-off game.

Just so you know, you can literally start with any FF and become a fan. But if you rather start with something simple, then it is kinda sorta a limitation.

Ahhhh.. Hmm, you should play through it again. So many who start off with it end up not understanding it until several years after.. maybe you'll gain an appreciation for it XD

I'm going to start playing FF for the first time, too. Never bought or played any of them.
I'm going to buy FF IV for DS and Dissidia on Vita. Should I get FF XIII and XIII 2? They look awesome.
