Absolutely not. Mario is one of the most if not the most iconic character in video game history. He is also part of what makes up Nintendo. There is no need to get rid of him. What Nintendo needs to do is use him in games which are fresh and offer innovative design and gameplay.

Aside from Mario Kart for the wiiU I fell Nintendo should retire Mario for a few years. If they don't I think they risk slowly killing the character. In the last year and a bit we have had:

Mario Kart 7
Mario Tennis
Super Mario 3D Land
New Super Mario Bros 2
New Super Mario Bros U

I can't be alone in felling that is far to much of a focus on mario. Where is a Zelda, or Metroid, or insert first party franchise here, or new first party IP for the 3ds or WiiU? We have lots of mario, and not much else. I understand it was there premature panic button for the 3ds but it has been ridiculous.

Give me a new Mario Kart and a new 3D Mario and I'll be set for a couple years. I'm ready for Zelda, Metroid and SSB.

Sega should retire Sonic.
Square Enix should retire Final Fantasy.
Microsoft should retire Halo.
Capcom should retire Megaman.

The list could go on.

Problem is, the new games that include these franchises are still fun, so please note that I am using expressing extreme sarcasm on the first 4 lines.

Nintendo wouldn't probably survive without Mario.

Don't you dare joke about Megaman like that. He pretty much is retired.

*Dead. They killed MegaMan. Unfortunately.

They should slow down Mario, but in no way should they retire him. But come on, Mario Sports Mix should never have been developed. Think of how an F-Zero could have been made instead...

No way, it's a good idea to take a chance on a new IP, but why not keep Mario and have new IPs aswell? Bingo, trillions of dollars.

Nintendo wouldn't probably survive without Mario.

Yet they have so many characters they could whore out as well.

Personally, I think they should mix it up more and sort of kill Mario games every now and then. Perhaps instead of releasing a new 3D Mario World release a Wario World game instead that year, month, or console generation.Once that is been done release another Donkey Kong Country game. Instead of Mario Kart they could actually make a Diddy Kong Racing game to mix up the racing. Then once DK Racing gets old swap it out for something like F-Zero. Mario Party could be replaced with something like, "Metriod Zone" where the game consist of random mini games revolving around the world of Metriod & played similar to say Fusion Frenzy. Have mini games like, "Metriod Bomber" where you roll around planting X amount of bombs on the course while trying not to run into other players planted bombs (Sort of like Bomberman meets Tron), other games revolving around battling in other ways, and mini games that would revolve around being in the correct mode. Perhaps a game where you have to avoid things coming at you so while in standing position you jump over stuff and say a tunnel or something appears you have to go into the ball form quickly and back out for other things. Quiet a few replacement IP's they could do just thinking randomly off the top of my head. Yet Mario is still the only mass released character.

I think they could do with not releasing as many as they have in the past.

I don't think Megaman is dead and I'm sure he will at some point reappear in a new game.

F-Zero wouldn't work on the Wii because tilt controls are too imprecise for it.

Name one Zelda or Metroid game that sold as well as Super Mario Galaxy.
