I'd say go for it, It's that big of an issue, and to use an intensity capture device, you would need other seperate software to handle encoding and recording.One very important factor for me is portability, which the AverMedia excels in. Price is also very important and while the C281 isn't exactly the cheapest out there, it will offer the best "bang for your buck".
Oh and btw, I do have a thunderbolt computer (family shared), but it's the ultra-pathetic Macbook Pro with 5400rpm 320 GB HDD, so thunderbolt will 1000% (yes 1000 was intentional) be bottle-necked by that.
I have my self-built USB 3.0 desktop, but as you say, USB 3 doesn't seem to easy to handle. I will be recording in 720p to start off, but if I can grow a bit, maybe I'll try the higher-priced models.
