Topics I've Started

The Router#bad YouTube channel

31 January 2014 - 01:30 PM

Hello everyone.  Starting last December, I started creating and posting videos to YouTube on a new format that I haven't seen done before.  Many of you know that I love riding motorcycles and I love following the video game industry.  What I'm up to is a basic motovlogging channel where the primary topics revolve around gaming.  Check it out and let me know what you think (constructive criticism welcomed, but don't expect me to accept every suggestion).

Day Tripper: Underratings, That New IP Smell, and EA Can DOS It Up Their FPS and THQ

Night Rider: Nintendo working on 9th gen "Fusion Terminal/DS"?

Night Rider: Nintendoom is Alive and Well

Playstation Now Too Far Ahead of Its Time?

Sorry for the apparent new thread SPAM.  I was getting a php error that made it appear that the topic wasn't being created.

Shin'en Explains Wii U EDRAM Usage

18 July 2013 - 11:58 AM

http://hdwarriors.co...ined-by-shinen/

Manfred Linzner of Shin’en:

‘Wii U eDRAM usage is comparable to the eDRAM in the XBOX360, but on Wii U you have enough eDRAM to use if for 1080p rendering.

In comparison, on XBOX360 you usually had to render in sub 720p resolutions or in mutliple passes.

Even if you don’t use MSAA (MultiSample Anti-Aliasing) youalready need around 16Mb just for a 1080p framebuffer (with double buffering). You simply don’t have that with XBOX360 eDRAM. As far as I know Microsoft corrected that issue and put also 32MB of Fast Ram into their new console.

We use the eDRAM in the Wii U for the actual framebuffers, intermediate framebuffer captures, as a fast scratch memory for some CPU intense work and for other GPU memory writes.

Using eDRAM properly is a simple way to get extra performance without any other optimizations.

In general, development for Wii U CPU+GPU is simple. You don’t need complicated setups or workarounds for things like HDR(High Dynamic Range)or linear RGB (Color Modeling). What we also like is that there are plenty of possibilities for speeding up your rendering and code, but you don’t have to dig deep for them to get proper performance.

For instance, all of our shaders used in ‘Nano Assault Neo’ are not really optimized. We just used the first iteration of them because they were already fast enough. We looked later through the shaders dis-assembly and noticed we can make them 30-40% faster by better pipeline usage or better hints for the shader compiler.

As ‘Nano Assault Neo’ never had a problem running at 60fps (including a 2nd screen rendering at 60fps on the GamePad) we didn’t have to do that kind of optimizations back then. For CPU usage ‘Nano Assault Neo’ only used the main CPU core. The two other cores were almost idle, beside a few percent used for our audio thread.

So all in all ‘Nano Assault Neo’ only used a fraction of the currently available resources on Wii U and looks and plays quite nice. And for the future, don’t forget that in many consoles, early in their life cycle, not all resources were already useable or accessible via the SDK. So we are sure the best is yet to come for Wii U.’

My motorcycle accident and my recovery

07 June 2013 - 09:12 AM

I wanted to make this post to let some here know why I haven't been as active on the forums recently, as among other things, I was involved in a motorcycle accident.

Three weeks ago I was cut off on the highway while riding my motorcycle to work.  In order to avoid running headlong into the car that had changed lanes with less than three feet of room in front of me, I applied the front and rear brakes too fast and too hard to recover control over the bike.

I fishtailed (rear wheel lockup), hit the kill switch and turned the bars hard to the right to lay my CBR600F4i down at an angle that would push me and the bike onto the left shoulder of the highway.  I came off underneath the bike and rolled several yards before coming to a stop.  No damage to the other vehicle.

At first I felt little pain, more frustration than anything, as my adrenaline took over.  After getting up and attempting to sit on the median dividing wall, others that had stopped for me laid me on the ground, as I had sustained some road rash and my left shoulder was completely immobilized.

EMT's and firefighters came to assess the situation, they removed sections of my jeans and my riding jacket to get access to injured areas, and prepared me for the ambulance ride to the ER.

I was diagnosed with a broken scapula and a fractured L4 vertebra.  The prognosis was positive, both required simple immobilization and rest to heal within months.  I am still dealing with back and shoulder pain, but it has improved dramatically.

To anyone considering owning and riding a motorcycle know this.  Had I not worn every piece of protective gear that day, rolling down the highway after a fall at 55MPH would have destroyed my arm, hands, and back.  I would not have had the opportunity to continue riding.  If there is any advice I can offer it is to get as much protective gear as possible and wear it ALL THE TIME.  No exceptions.  We call it ATGATT: All the Gear, All the Time.

My motorcycle was totaled because the repair costs exceeded the value of the bike, and I will be picking up my new bike today.

RIP 2005 CBR600F4i, you will be missed.

Wii U Goes On Nationwide Tour

03 June 2013 - 09:12 AM

Nintendo has detailed on an official Wii U Tour 2013 website six iconic locations where Nintendo fans can test drive the Wii U along with several of the currently available games for the platform.  The first location we’ve already heard about, as the tour kicked off on May 26th in Anaheim, California at Disneyland Resort’s Downtown Disney.  The events are set up as a living room setting with backdrops of some of Nintendo’s most iconic and beloved characters.

Future event locations include:

  • Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, FL – June 5th – June 23rd
  • Navy Pier 600 East Grand Avenue, Chicago, IL – June 28th – July 21st
  • Bloomington, MN – June 28th – July 21st
  • Boston, MA – August 10th – September 2nd
  • Hollywood & Highland Center – August 10th – September 2nd

A few of the venues have yet to be determined, but they have the cities and dates mapped out to coincide to popular vacation destinations throughout the summer months.

Nintendo have also given a list of what can be seen and experienced at these locations:

The events will also let attendees experience the features available on Wii U, to include the eShop, TVii, Wii U Chat, Wii Street U, and more.

Is Nintendo coming to a city near you or a city in your vacation plans? I know I’ll be making a trip to Hollywood to see it for myself.  Let us know in the comments below.
