#224836 Rejoined Team Nintendo

Posted by GreenPenInk on 20 June 2013 - 08:46 PM in Introduction Central

 Hi!

I spent my childhood and most of my formative years playing Nintendo, I outright rejected the PS and Xbox and never had either in my home until the PS3 which my brother bought. I skipped the Nintendo Wii but I just bought a Wii U and have absolutely no idea why.  Not to say I regret the purchase.  I just have no idea why or how a wave of nostalgia so big so suddenly hit me and convinced me to spend $1000+ on a Wii U, games, accessories and a new TV.  I didn't see an advertisement or a friend who suggested it.  A random urge, some googling and about a week later and my room is completely revamped to incorporate the Wii U and Samsung as the centerpieces.

The first games I bought along with the system were New Super Mario Bros U and Resident Evil.   Mario was fun and brought back a lot of memories but it had me thinking I was just too old to really love this anymore.  Resident Evil (first time playing one, I've never been as into the Zombie thing as a lot of people are) I bought specifically hoping it would scare me and allowed myself to only play at night after reading messed up stuff about messed up stuff on the internet and getting myself creeped out to begin with. The conehead zombies didn't scare me but my character's shadow literally made me jump in my seat several times, I lost most of that nervous fear when I saw the whole game wasn't set on that ship hahah.  Noob.

At that point I decided I needed to go to a classic.  My bread and butter Zelda.  I bought Skyward Sword and god damn I'm in love again.  I went in thinking the motion controlled swordplay would be awesome, was annoyed at how painful it seemed to be for my wrists after getting a taste and went back to being fan after refining my motions. I'm so stoked for Pikmin 3, Wind Waker, Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart and Donkey Kong. I'm a completionist so the games I have currently plus I'll probably end up getting Darksiders 2 and Assassin's Creed should tide me over until Pikmin and beyond when the rest of these games start coming out.

I can absolutely see how avid supporters of Nintendo who spent major time with the Wii could be disillusioned with how things are currently but I am utterly optimistic that I'm going to have so much fun with this system.  Hopefully, with friends I make here because I don't know a single person who owns the Wii U.  Again, that speaks to some of the trouble Nintendo is/or seems to be having but I'm 100% on team "they'll figure it out."

Edit: Seems team Green is invading these boards.

#224862 Nintendo Minute: E3 Recap

Posted by GreenPenInk on 20 June 2013 - 09:33 PM in Wii U Games and Software

I wish she (anyone) gave a specific for Mario 3D World to be her favourite other than the cat suit.  I really want to like it.

Donkey Kong is looking pretty fresh in HD.

#224874 How many games do you play at one time?

Posted by GreenPenInk on 20 June 2013 - 09:54 PM in Wii U Games and Software

If I really like a single player game I will obsessively play it until I complete at least the main quest line.  If I am playing a multiplayer game at the time though I bounce between both depending on my mood.  I find if I start switching it up between games too often it means I'm not enjoying it and I won't start enjoying it more later on and never end up completing it.  So I actively try to limit myself to one single player game at a time hoping it'll capture my full attention at some point, like a lot of books that start off slow.

#225457 Interesting rant on 3rd party games

That guy repeats himself a thousand times but his point is on the mark.  Could've condensed that video into a minute long clip but I'll admit he's god damn good at crow barring zombies to death so I watched it all the way through.

#225646 Nintendo E3 Wrap Up Video

Posted by GreenPenInk on 23 June 2013 - 08:48 PM in E3 2013 Archive

The only reason I can think of to not have at least one of those E3 games released with the system is they wanted to gauge people's reactions to the gamepad and system before delivering their classics. Anyways, I'm sure that topic has been hashed enough times. As someone who adopted the Wii U very recently this waterfall of games leading up and into the new year isn't such a bad thing.  Gives me enough time to enjoy it all without feeling rushed to get the next hot release.  So this E3 was solid from my perspective.  Nothing mind bottling.  Just solid.

(For whatever reason there's a ridiculous amount of unfounded optimism in me that Nintendo really wants to bring all it's characters to life in HD and so throughout the next few years we will see every single one of it's classic franchises revived.)

#225648 E3 and the Gamepad

Posted by GreenPenInk on 23 June 2013 - 08:57 PM in E3 2013 Archive

I wish I could remember which article it was and even so it was nothing concrete but it was mentioned their Zelda U will make full of use of the gamepad and be fully integrated in every part of the game.  Nothing but talk at this point but it's possible they're not showing off the gamepad until they have a flagship game (or two) with which to show it off.  I'm also of the opinion unless there's a meaningful, fun and intuitive way to incorporate the gamepad into the software just let it function as a second screen/helpful utility.  Not every game needs to use it for the sake of using it.  Let it build up some momentum and show off it's functionality so developers are tempted to use it rather than feel forced to use it as an afterthought just because it's part of the system.

#225655 What Nintendo should do next year.

Posted by GreenPenInk on 23 June 2013 - 09:25 PM in E3 2013 Archive

This year into next the dominos are Pikmin, 101, Windwaker, Tropical Freeze, Super Mario, Mario Kart, SSB, X...

Imagine next year being Zelda, Metroid, 1 creative new IP, 1 mega hit multiplatform (e.g. if we got KH3 this year), announcement of Starfox in development as headliners among a slew of other releases... very hopeful but not out of the realm of possibility.

I think Starfox utilizing the gamepad as the control for your ship would be incredibly fun.  Being able to divert power into weapons, defense, engines etc. on the fly, rotating weapons, leaving smoke trails, rear view mode so you can simultaneously see what's in front of and behind you and so on. Multiplayer Starfox where instead of the usual cast the camera puts your face into the avatars. Flying with your squadron of friends in HD. Got damn. For the love of cooters give us a new Starfox already.

I guess what I'm really trying to say is next year Nintendo should give us Starfox.

#225658 Xbox One only 3x as powerful as the 360, while PS4 is 10x as PS3?

Posted by GreenPenInk on 23 June 2013 - 09:46 PM in General Gaming

Both of those demos were better than Nintendo's on Fallon.  None of the 3 devs were great showmen but that little clip of Mario 3D you see constantly is the worst god damn piece of material you could show people to get them excited I've ever seen.  Ugh.

#225844 New and Thinking About Getting Wii U

Posted by GreenPenInk on 24 June 2013 - 04:09 PM in Introduction Central

Welcome! Depending on just how much you're itching to play I'd wait until August for Pikmin if you've got some spare cash and free time or until December to see whether there truly is a price drop or not.

So far I'm enjoying it quite a bit.  Two non-Nintendo related issues are my biggest gripe. One being no Amazon Instant Video in Canada without workarounds.

#225847 E3 and the Gamepad

Posted by GreenPenInk on 24 June 2013 - 04:16 PM in E3 2013 Archive

I think it would be cool to have a mini-game(s) for off-TV use....just kind of a bonus-doesn't have to be anything major.

I think a feature like that would be good in instances like crafting in an MMO where usually it's a horribly boring time sink watching progress bars while you're stuck at a crafting station.

You're very good.  I always get a bit jelly of people who are good at graphic design/editting while I sit there Microsoft Painting my way through life.

Yeesh being unable to rotate it is driving me mad.

Anyway, this is one of the Club Nintendo rewards you can purchase. Smaller than I thought it would be but fits the remote and nunchuk regardless.

Looks spiffy. I hate vacuuming my computer's vent screens. If this solved that issue I would love one... if I had a few thousand lying around.

#225888 Opinions on Wii remote and nunchuck.

Posted by GreenPenInk on 24 June 2013 - 10:34 PM in General Gaming

It is nice in controlled instances.  It's still too inaccurate/unresponsive to be used as a main form of control for the vast majority of games IMO.

#225889 Club Nintendo Platinum

Posted by GreenPenInk on 24 June 2013 - 10:44 PM in General Gaming

I'm currently sitting 220 coins away from platinum status for the year and am planning on getting Lego City Undercover in the near future that would give me +50 coins, I could download Yoshi's Island for 30¢

giving me another +10 coins, I'm on the fence about Luigi U which would be another +40 coins leaving me at 120 coins remaining.

Has anyone heard any rumours of the rewards for gold/platinum this year?  If it were you would you make the push to platinum status?  I'd probably buy some Wii games if I was to go for it sadly it seems there's no way I'd be able to find a new Xenoblade with the #pin which would be the #1 game I'd want.

#225891 Will We Get A Majora's Mask Remake?

Posted by GreenPenInk on 24 June 2013 - 10:47 PM in General Gaming

I remember I ran a really terrible fansite for Majora's Mask heh.  Oh god, the countless hours I spent writing up tutorials for that game.  Loved it but please spend most of your time making new stuff Nintendo if there was a remake of Majora's Mask make it a 3DS version instead of taking the time to do it full out on the U.

Yeah, I'm getting the vibe I should just save my money. My OCD will give me a tough time for the next week but I think I'll make it.

I'm stoked to see the new list of items that will be available to purchase.  Hopefully they're worth it for you two BSC/Goku seems you both have a huge hoard of coins.
