Regrettably, we’ve just been informed by Nintendo of America Inc. that we do not have permission to broadcast Super Smash Bros. Melee for Evo 2013. In light of this, we must make the following changes to the schedule.

  • Smash has been removed from the stream schedule and replaced with a mix of Persona 4 Arena and King of Fighters XIII
  • Smash Finals have been moved from Sunday to Saturday, 2:00 PM
  • Persona 4 Arena Finals have been moved to Sunday, 10:00 AM
  • King of Fighters XIII Finals have beem moved to Sunday, 12:00 PM

Our apologies to Smash players and fans.

*Sigh* They haven't even gave a reason why...
Evo 2013 is Smash's biggest fighting game tournament. People donated money towards breast cancer in order to see Melee streamed at the tournament. They should be thankful that people consider the Smash series to be on the same level of COMPETITIVENESS as games such as MvC3, SFXT, SF4AE, Injustice, etc...

I just don't understand why...
Melee/Brawl has been streamed on MANY tournaments before...

For those of you who don't know about EVO....

The Evolution Championship Series (Evo for short) represents the largest and longest-running fighting game tournaments in the world. Evo events bring together the best of the best from around the world in a dazzling exhibition of skill and fun, as players and fans gather to honor the competitive spirit in an open format and determine a champion. You’ll also find that our tournaments are about more than just winning. Evo events are open to anyone, feature many stations available for relaxed free play, and offer unique opportunities to meet people from different countries and different walks of life who share your passion. Established champions face off against unknown newcomers, and new rivals that might have only talked or fought online meet up and become old friends.

That's a shame They could of given some hype towards the new Smash game.

Is Nintendo serious now? In such a critical time, when they know they're hurting themselves with the lack of advertisement for the Wii U and their games, they prohibit broadcasting Smash? Do they know the new Smash is going to be a huge system seller or are they that oblivious at the moment?

This is a bit unnecessary. Things like this have been going on forever and only now they choose to prohibit it? It doesn't make sense. And it would help build some more hype for the new game.

To be honest, I can careless if I get to watch Melee or not. I'm more concerned about Nintendo's decisions, they're disappointing fans and people who support them.

I'm reading up on quite a few sites from some people that EVO never even got Nintendo's permission to stream Melee in the first place.

Apparently the situation's a little less black and white than we first believed.

The fact that the proceeds were going towards Breast Cancer kinda makes Nintendo look like Nazi's right now...

Over 90k was collected in donations to have Melee there in the first place, though they didn't even have permission in the first place so every single argument is invalid.

At least it's still going to be at the event itself.

Apparently Tekken Tag 2's stream is canceled as well, so it's not just Smash Bros. What sucks is that the Completionist, one of my favorite people on Youtube (and you should all check him out) is competing in both games, and now I can't watch him. >:(

We need permission to stream games we've bought all of a sudden? In that case we might aswell just not be able to post YouTube videos and stream video games.

Like I said, melee has been streamed in tourneys many times before. They could've announced this earlier on instead of at the last minute. The change in schedule is even conflicting with flight times for certain participants.

Apparently they went back on it. Melee will be streamed!

Also, only the finals for Tekken will be streamed, not the whole thing.

I think what may have happened was Nintendo simply may have not known what EVO is, or what they were doing with Smash Bros and once they got the full details, they gave the go ahead.

You know what? This entire thing now has me interested in watching my fellow Smash Bros fans melee it out at EVO.

Wow. Nintendo could have made it a win-win by making a deal where they have Nintendo commercial spots during the stream.

Sad.
