Always online. Games tied to a single console. Indie developers can't self-publish. Just when you thought Microsoft couldn't have made a bigger hash of its Xbox One announcement, along comes the company's head of interactive entertainment Don Mattrick to attack backwards compatibility — something which is dear to a great many players.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Mattrick said:

If you’re backwards compatible, you’re really backwards.

He went on to claim that only 5% of players made use of the feature on their current system, suggesting that it's not as big a selling point as many would have you believe. Backwards compatibility was included in the Xbox 360, but not all Xbox titles were playable.

Well, you know, it probably doesn't help that 90% of all the Xbox titles couldn't work on the console, and the ones that DID work had serious issues in terms of sound quality, graphical quality, and actually working.

I know I probably wouldn't enjoy my 3DS as much if it couldn't play DS titles. Same goes for my Wii U not being able to play Wii games.

Backwards compatibility with DS games was one of the main selling points for me with the 3DS.  Same goes for the Wii.

So when a system completely botches a feature, people tend not to use it?

If I had owned the Xbox 360, I wouldn't have been bothered with the Xbox One not being backwards compatible. I wouldn't even mind hooking up my Xbox 360 to play Xbox 360 games should I feel the want to do so. But I don't believe that calling people "backwards" for wanting backwards compatibility was a good, professional move on Microsoft's end. Sure, it would be a lot easier if the Xbox One had such as having to either hook up both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One together or separately to play games is a rather daunting task, but I would have done it anyway should I have bought the Xbox One.

They could have handled the situation a lot more better than that.

However, since I do not play the Xbox 360 and have no intentions of buying the Xbox One, I am not bothered by this.

Something to think on: Although they're calling the people wanting backwards compatibility "backwards" and what-not, wouldn't Microsoft technically be "backwards" for naming their next-generation console Xbox One compared to the Xbox 360?

EA teamed up with Microsoft even when EA was named the worst gaming company. So that is... that is a pretty tough question

Am going with Microsoft, calls people backwards for wanting backwards compatibility, It doesn't have backwards computability, there next generation console can't play used games (without paying for the game), it needs to be connected to the internet once every 24 hours, Has employees that are arrogant on twitter, fakes applause in the audience of the reveal, makes you pay to play multiplayer, and even after paying your main home screen is clustered with advertisements, in there entire reveal they explained how its on TV, how there is a halo show, how sports and sports games work, and spent most of the gaming part of the conference on Call Of Duty, i could go on but this post itself is probably going to offend some people.

i have to agree with you, and there is not a consumer in his right mind who will disagree that Microsoft has made a majority of downright terrible choices.

Of course microsoft wants to cut off thoughts about playing old games as early as possible.

They want to start putting the idea in peoples heads that playing old games is shameful and you should feel bad and ashamed for wanting to play old games over again.

That way, when this generation is over people have been conditioned to accept that every single game they ever bought for xbone will stop working, and not complain but instead open their wallets to buy permission to play on xbox 2, like good little brainwashed customers.

The business term is called manufactured consent.

Oh yeah so buying a Wii U and 3DS and basically getting 4 consoles (Wii, Wii U, DS and 3DS) is backwards? If you ask me that's a bargain and it's certainly more than MS is offering espesially if you factor in Virtual Console games, Microsoft damage control trying to be smart but basically digging that huge a$$ hole deeper, how they are gonna get out of this one I can't wait to see, XBOne worst console reveal ever full stop.

I honestly don't see the problem of not having backwards compatibility. I doubt any of us would buy 360 games without a 360. Seems silly to make that investment otherwise.
