Microsoft's Xbox One hasn't had the greatest of starts - the announcement has been clouded by news relating to blocked second-hand sales, "always online" requirements and a complete absence ofbackwards compatibility.

With second-hand software sales potentially at risk, many retailers will lose out when Microsoft's console hits the market — retailers like eBay.

eBay's German arm has seized on this opportunity to stick the boot in, and has posted a promotional listing on Facebook for the Wii U which features the following selling points:

  • Keine Gebraucht-Spiel-Sperren (no used games blocking)
  • Keine Online-Pflicht (no mandatory online)
  • Kein Gedöns (no fuss)

This creates an interesting situation; sites like eBay (not to mention dedicated video game retailers which offer part-exchange deals on software) could potentially throw their collective weight behind the Wii U and PS4 — both of which will allow second-hand sales — while treating the Xbox One as a second-class system. A similar situation occurred when Sony launched the ill-fated PSP Go, a handheld which didn't play physical software and therefore denied retailers the chance to make a profit on games. Could the same thing happen with the Xbox One? As ever, we'd love to hear your viewpoint.

Your thoughts?

Interesting and a little funny. I think Microsoft will be able to turn around all this flak they're getting, somehow.

Something tells me the consumer and possibly others will make MS change their ways.

If they drop this used game and pass crap that would turn them around.

No they made it even worse.

They promise you better graphics via streaming!!!! That means xbox hardware is not that capable of physics and lighting? That also means the demos we've seen they were enhanced via a super computer and cloud?

So you basically, you buy a device that is competitive to satellite dishes. Not a console. That also proves once again, that games will be fully factional with CLOUD (internet access)... gaming in 2 gears?  If you pay internet and xbox live u may have better graphics.

Good post and nice to see you on the forums, haven't caught a post of yours in a while. Microsoft has been changing drastically the past few years in trying to adapt to the mobile space, tablets, and improve their OS to allow powerful cross platform computing. They have managed to put out some very gimped and uninspired products that seem half baked along the way and unfortunately it seems to have leaked over into the Xbox One. At times, it feels like MS is thinking a bit too far ahead rather then just several years out.

Agreed on MSFT getting too far ahead of itself.  Seems like the Xbox was designed to compete more with Apple, when it releases Apple TV and Google/Android/Samsung.  I suppose to a degree Nintendo created its gamepad as a response to Apple too.  That will be pretty cool if you can use your iPad as a controller and have it integrate with the TV.

Your thoughts?

It's not possible. It'll become a reality. If second hand games are out, which they may not be, Game Stop will do well if the Wii U and PS4 does well.

It's that simple.

hehe, nah you are not odd. Funny thing is I don't care too much either way. I have Windows 8 on my desktop, and have a touch screen however I virtually never use touch and am always setting in desktop. I do like how fast Windows 8 boots, and that sums it up .

Or just not buy said system, which I assume Rose Red is planning to do.

I didn't like it until I realized scrolling the mouse wheel allows me to quickly scroll the start screen. After that I started to enjoy the speed. Of course, with 16GB of DDR3 ram and an AMD A8 APU, any OS would be speedy.

My desktop at home is an all in one, so specs are not it's forte hehe but it windows 8 is still lightning quick even over 7. But don't want to get off topic.

Regarding this topic, when retailers see potential threats in their business model they react, now lets see how the reactions play out in MS's world and retailers.

explains y they so willingly waisted so that much power on saving you 1-2 minutes. but the fact you need internet for good graphics sounds like a issue, laggy graphics and similar being built in to the game, then taking a noticable hit to gameplay offline? at best i see COD's built in lag running 24/7.

You need to be online for authentication. Has nothing to do with cloud computing.

Exactly, it was something Microsoft threw out there, knowing that it was a meaningless statement.

They actually said that? That's not smart at all. Unless, in the future, they are planning on doing cloud computing, so the Xbox One WILL be the ONE device you will ever need.

And i wouldn't doubt they are hoping for that.

And i wouldn't doubt they are hoping for that.

They are claiming that cloud computing will give them 3x the storage and compute of the console itself, and that it will enable better looking and performing games.  Unfortunately for them it isn't just unlikely, it's ludicrous to try to get people to believe that somehow resource sharing is going to make gaming better, when all it is in actuality is a way to get your info to third parties and track your usage.

There was a story about a German privacy specialist (whatever that means, prolly works for an Information Assurance company) that called the xbox one a "Twisted Nightmare"
