Looks like Bowser is the main villain again.
You can see his emblem at the 0:34 mark and when you lose a life, Maybe Bowser somehow took over the mushroom kingdom and Peach is helping to save it.

Looks like Bowser is the main villain again.
You can see his emblem at the 0:34 mark and when you lose a life, Maybe Bowser somehow took over the mushroom kingdom and Peach is helping to save it.

Might be placeholder. Miyamoto found the idea of Wart returning interesting, and the boss we saw obviously was a huge version of the SMB2 snake boss. Also the playable characters are a SMB2 reference. Wart returning has never been more likely.

Seriously, would be great if you were to fight Wart like in Super Mario Bros 2 for NES - the cast is already there anyway.
One thing`s for sure, no one can say it`s another save the princess Mario game.

Well, there are a lot of options. Have you played the Mario and Luigi series? New villains were introduced there, and as silly as it seems an invasion of the Fuzzies could be the story for Super Mario 3D World (seriously, this is not out of the question).
Of course, no one but those working on the project know. We'll have to wait and see. Personally I'd love to have King Koopa (Bowser) be put out of commission by a new villain and Team Mario rush off to save him. Irony. Gotta love it.

Diplomacy? I imagine the Mushroom Kingdom does a fair bit of trade with Sarasaland, possibly even buying their oil.

If Bowser is indeed the villain, I'd be interested to see the story. Bowser never had any motives besides taking over the Mushroom Kingdom and kidnapping Peach. Considering that if he did try to take over the kingdom, the fact that he didn't kidnap Peach in the process seems surprisingly fishy. There are a few possibilities for the villain...
1. Bowser has a new unknown motive
2. Bowser kidnapped someone else (Daisy?)
3. The villain is someone posing to be Bowser.
If the 3rd theory (or if Bowser isn't the villain and the flags in the video are placeholders) is correct, there a few villains to consider.
1. Wart (just for the sake of the many SMB2 references)
2. Tatanga (Super Mario Land's villain who kidnapped Daisy, and a world boss in Mario Land 2)
3. Someone entirely new
Paper Mario and Mario and Luigi series villains could be possible. But those games are usually confined in their own world, considering the regular Mario games have no direct references to their storylines or characters.
