The WiiU seems wonderful... in fact IT IS WONDERFUL. But many have immediatly criticized the fact that it uses a small amount of flash memory for its internal memory (i think it was 8GB). It is also said, though, that the WiiU will support USB (2.0) for storage. I know nothing is finalized but i think this is a great idea, some users hardly use any internal memory with their consoles so they get this at a fair price, while others can expand using external memory. It also takes SD cards but they only go so high. What this thread is really about is the idea of adding storage (for you virtual hoarders.... including me) through the USB with an external hardrive or any large storage device.If you are putting downloadable games (or putting retail games from their discs to the memory, as many PS3 users do to shorten load times), you're gonna want that software to load quickly, but with USB 2.0 it doesn't load to fast. I've experienced USB 3.0 and i have to say it loads files much much faster. For those of you who dont know the difference, USB 3.0 is a different plug all together, it isn't popular now, but with increasing storage devices we need increased file movement speed.That's what it looks like
Anyway, the question is, with all the possible software, and now the rumoured "App store", along with shortening load times of games upto 25GB (rarley ever reaches that point) and the new wonder of updates and DLC... should Nintendo be concerned about not having USB 3.0? Should they add one or multiple usb 3.0 inputs to the back of the system? Do you plan on using more than the 8GB of storage that the WiiU is supposed to come with? And if so, do you think 3.0 is a useful added speed for this application. I think theyy should but what do you think?

I think we may end up getting more than 8GB with the Wii U actually. The Wii was essentially last gen in that it didn't require much space at all for it's games other than save files, but the Wii U will be trying to be a next gen console. For a while it will be running current gen games, so it needs the space for game installations, DLC and WiiU-Ware games. I don't think the typical hardcore gamer would be too happy to have all of that spread awkwardly across a bunch of USBs, they want it all in one place. But Nintendo is likely using the period of time before E3 to take feedback and make improvements, so if we're lucky we might end up with a proper hard drive in the final model.

I don't know if I've ever seen anything that uses USB 3.0. I find it unlikely that Nintendo would add something to the Wii U if it is not commonly used. It might be a good idea for them to do so to prepare for the future, but I have my doubts about that happening.

I think that it would be wise for Nintendo to have at least 1 USB 3.0 port. Given that the console will most likely be out from 2012 to 2017, they need to have the technology available to keep up, and in 2017 a lot more devices will be 3.0 than 2.0. It's kind of like Wi-Fi with the Wii-in 2006, most Wi-Fi was in public places and not in homes.

As far as i know, many external hardrives are switching to a USB 3.0 plug, but it may have USB 2.0 on the other side of the wire connecting it to a computer. I know it doesn't make sense but it still increases speed.

First of all, USB 3.0 connectors don't look like that, they look like USB 2.0 and are completely compatible with USB 2.0

I don't think Nintendo should bother with USB 3.0 as it is fairly expensive to implement, premature technology, and isn't that useful yet.

That's what the flash memory is for it will be light years faster than ps360 as they use hdd loading

USB 3.0 would be a smart move by Nintendo to incorporate. Its not exactly the only option though. Whether or not USB 3.0 or something else needs to be added depends largely from my understanding on the drive's read speed. USB 2.0 may still be useful if the drive's read speed is lower than the bandwidth of the USB 2.0 port.

USB 3.0 is a pointless costly addition it would make no sense as we haven't capped out the use for USB 2.0.

I agree. For the sake of futureproofing and keeping up to date.

Hmm... 3.0 can work to their advantage. I'm not in a position of technological know-how to justify either way.

As long as it doesn't affect value too greatly. Remember, this is potentially more expensive than Gamecube support, and they've already openly come out and said "NO CUBE FOR YOU! REGGIE HAS SPOKEN!"

That would be nice. There is a lot of HDD's and SSD's that use USB 3.0 now. I almost got one myself (didn't because the price matched the quality. The only problem I see is it would cost too much. Since the Wii U should last for about about five to six years, at least, then it should have 3.0, because 2.0 would get outdated eventually, just like 1.0 did.
