Game Red and Manga Red are both superior.
Ash's pokemon always weaken when he reaches a new region. It's like he gets weaker over time.

There were two series; pokemon special and pokemon the electric tale of pikachu.

Pokemon Special was the superior manga, where there was a great over-arching story for all three gens, the Elite Four is an antagonistic group, all the characters meet, and in the beginning an ekans is chopped in half.

lolol, how are people even voting for Ash? Ash is a whiny wimp who can't manage to take down the dumbest(if charming) Team Rocket members. He's also voiced by a girl.

Red took down all of Team Rocket, and is the final boss of S/G/C. The FINAL BOSS.

I'd have to go with Red, at least he's actually won a Pokemon League.

To be fair, both characters are written to fit the intentions of the shows/series they star in. It's not just them either, but their world too.

Ultimately though, what really matters is what your interpretation of a "better" trainer is. Posts here suggests that a better trainer needs to win more Pokemon league titles, obtain more powerful Pokemon, and consistently win battles. I'd probably agree that the game and manga adaptions of the character are better than the anime one.
