#232848 Shin'en Explains Wii U EDRAM Usage

Manfred Linzner of Shin’en:

Wii U eDRAM usage is comparable to the eDRAM in the XBOX360, but on Wii U you have enough eDRAM to use if for 1080p rendering.

In comparison, on XBOX360 you usually had to render in sub 720p resolutions or in mutliple passes.

Even if you don’t use MSAA (MultiSample Anti-Aliasing) youalready need around 16Mb just for a 1080p framebuffer (with double buffering). You simply don’t have that with XBOX360 eDRAM. As far as I know Microsoft corrected that issue and put also 32MB of Fast Ram into their new console.

We use the eDRAM in the Wii U for the actual framebuffers, intermediate framebuffer captures, as a fast scratch memory for some CPU intense work and for other GPU memory writes.

Using eDRAM properly is a simple way to get extra performance without any other optimizations.

In general, development for Wii U CPU+GPU is simple. You don’t need complicated setups or workarounds for things like HDR(High Dynamic Range)or linear RGB (Color Modeling). What we also like is that there are plenty of possibilities for speeding up your rendering and code, but you don’t have to dig deep for them to get proper performance.

For instance, all of our shaders used in ‘Nano Assault Neo’ are not really optimized. We just used the first iteration of them because they were already fast enough. We looked later through the shaders dis-assembly and noticed we can make them 30-40% faster by better pipeline usage or better hints for the shader compiler.

As ‘Nano Assault Neo’ never had a problem running at 60fps (including a 2nd screen rendering at 60fps on the GamePad) we didn’t have to do that kind of optimizations back then. For CPU usage ‘Nano Assault Neo’ only used the main CPU core. The two other cores were almost idle, beside a few percent used for our audio thread.

So all in all ‘Nano Assault Neo’ only used a fraction of the currently available resources on Wii U and looks and plays quite nice. And for the future, don’t forget that in many consoles, early in their life cycle, not all resources were already useable or accessible via the SDK. So we are sure the best is yet to come for Wii U.’

#233660 Miyamoto wishes Nintendo went HD sooner with the Wii

Posted by Mewbot on 21 July 2013 - 02:36 AM

I wish the Wii had been a bit more powerful full stop, that's the reason I skipped it, glad I did though, I love my Wii U now though :D

You skipped the Wii? How did you survive knowing you were missing out on exclusives like Smash Bros and Zelda?

Please tell me you've gone back and bought a bunch of them for your Wii U...

#188180 "Bayonetta 2 wouldnt be possible without Nintendo" - Kamiya

I don't think so. You don't own this forum or moderate it. I'm entitled to my opinion just like you. If you can't provide constructive posts maybe its you who should leave.

I don't think any of your posts here have been constructive.
I find it absolutely hilarious that people complain that Nintendo systems don't have anything, then once they get an exclusive, everyone's butt just starts aching.

#146379 Megaman's future depends on the success of Street Fighter X Megaman

Posted by Guy Fieri on 10 December 2012 - 04:12 PM

Remember when Capcom said that the success of the Mega Man Legends 3 Prototype Edition ( eShop game) would affect whether or not MML3 would be released? But ended up not even releasing the prototype and canning MML3? I don't have high hopes for Mega Man's future.......

I just hope they get rid of the friend code system, if that happens then we know that it will be good.

- Doesn't seem like there'll be paid DLC for Animal Crossing: New Leaf because it'd make the game be too costly.

#121129 Miiverse will NOT be available at launch (Video proof)

Posted by Foot on 24 October 2012 - 11:17 AM

No, all was said that Miiverse will not be available on Nintendo 3DS, Mobile, and PC when the Wii U launches. Unless Nintendo specifically says, "Miiverse will not make launch" then we will have Miiverse at launch

I plan on getting a pair of these once they come out. They are cheap and made by a great company.

Please people stop. As a fan of Nintendo, the Wii U should only be compared to the Wii not the PS3 or XBox360. It really makes people seem stupid. You are comparing a 2012 BMW to a 2005 BMW. So please stop it. Compare it to the Wii. The improvements and enhancements made over the Wii. After all it is the next generation console from Wii not the next generation console of Microsoft or Sony. End this now or when the Next Xbox or Playstation surface you will get trolled. Stop trying to pay back the Sony and Microsoft fans that treated you wrong. It is not necessary at all.

#114939 Still Have Doubts About The Wii U GamePad's Touch Screen?

Posted by NegaScott128 on 04 October 2012 - 11:36 AM

I've read an article in Nintendo Power about Rayman Legends, and Michael Ancel said that the touch screen on the Gamepad has a latency of 1/60 of a second. That's a single frame.

#112469 Wii Talk, U Listen Podcast!

Hey everyone. Today is finally the day to announce something that has been in the works for quite some time! Yes, there is finally going to be a podcast created by members of the forum! Who are those members? Well in terms of main cast we have Mignaga, TrickySx4, Sir. Noonabites, Deadly Virus, and SolxBurst! We've all met a couple of times over the past week or two, and discussed the main ideas of what this will be about, and how we are going to structure things.

1. We've decided to record our first intro podcast this Friday, and hope to have it be available soon after for everyone to enjoy.
2. We will have some pre-recorded segments hosted by members external to the main group. We will announce those later, once we have a better idea of what they will be.
3. We are going to try to review at least one new or old game/demo each podcast.
4. We are going to try to make some themed podcasts that fit with a certain game release, or time of year as those crop up. (I.E. A Halloween episode dedicated to horror games, and movies)
5. We would love to have guests on, but please don't ask to be a guest. We will seek you out, and hopefully have you on as soon as possible.

Anyways, we hope that this is something that the entire community enjoys, and looks forward to each new episode. If you have any questions or concerns please leave them in the thread bellow, and we will try to answer them!

-Mignaga

(P.S. Thank you to Sushi for designing our amazing logo! We really appreciate it!)
(P.P.S Spoilers we will talk about Final Fantasy... A lot.)

#113269 Are you concerned about if the Wii U can breaks because of overuse?

Posted by Dark Link on 27 September 2012 - 04:28 PM

No, and if it does I am confident Nintendo will cover you if there is a widespread issue with the system. Look at the DS Lite and the broken hinge, Nintendo eventually caught on and offered free repairs regardless of warranty, while it took a class action lawsuit for MS to extend the warranties to 3 years for the 360's RRoD problem.
