So with the new trailer for Zelda Wii U, there has been some unrest about whether the character shown is Link, and if so, is it a male or female? So here's my question... Who do you think the character in the trailer is? And who do you wish it was?

 

As for me, I think the character shown is a male Link. I don't see why anybody thinks otherwise. There's just nothing pointing to it being a girl... And I also hope that's what it is. I don't want to play as Zelda (well, I'd be okay if you could play as her, but with Link being the main character), I don't want to play as Aryll, I don't want to play as genderbent Link... I want to play as LINK, the iconic, ever unchanged protagonist we've come to know and love. There's no reason to change him, and I honestly think it would upset more people than it would please.

 

But that's not what this thread is for, it's for YOUR opinions. Vote in the poll, and discuss below!

 

EDIT: So apparently, Aonuma has stated that his comment about the character not necessarily being Link was a joke, and that it was, indeed, Link. He goes on to say that he "doesn't want people to get hung up on the looks of Link", and that he purposefully "didn't define him so much that it becomes limiting to the players". However, this quote came from a site I've never heard of before; MMGN, an Australian Wii U fan-site. Could be fake.

EDIT 2: Picture of the interwiever with Aonuma. Name tag says MMGN, so assuming this isn't a photoshop, this seems legit.

We've always named the protagonist in Zelda games, there is no mention of the name Link in the series unless you name the protagonist Link.

He's marketed as Link, in Smash too, but like I said the name isn't mentioned in the games.

I'm fine if it's Link.  I don't want to play as a Zelda who is a Link clone, though, that doesn't work.  She is the triforce of Wisdom for a reason.

 

It would be really neat if the character wasn't Link, though, like Link's sister or a "female" Link.  The gameplay would be really great if combat evolved to not focus on the sword (and focuses on archery), even possibly dropping the Master Sword (but not a sword altogether).  Now, it would be nice to have a plot reason why Link isn't the MC, but shows why, and maybe have a hero take Link's place and defeat Ganon in some unconventional way.

 

I've always wanted a Zelda game where you either play as Ganon (like a good Gerudo fighting against previous spirit/non-reincarnated Ganon) or a warrior like Link but who isn't Link (like no Master Sword).

As much as I love the idea of a female Link, I don't think this Link looks feminine enough to actually be. You would think they would give more visual cues.

Link is not officially his name but Hero he is often called. As mentioned you can call him whatever. He is still just sometimes called link as it's easier to identify.

The name Link originally referred to how he was the link between a simulated world and a real one. Long before Assassins Creed the original concept for Zelda was for him to switch worlds and the Triforce was going to be computer chips. For many reasons they did not go that route. NES limitations. Same year had another sci fi game in Metroid and Shiggy liked Peter Pan and a fantasy setting more. Nintendo will tell you now he is the link to the player but whatevs.

 

To the poll I want it to be Zelda. I am fine with Link (see lol) again but would love it to be Zelda.

Well I was hoping it was another character because I don't really like the new look.

I was thinking this is further down one of the Wind Waker time lines, where the world is back to normal, and everyone worships the hero of time by dressing like him.
So this character could be any villager or jerk.

Maybe once he has the tunic on I'll like it better but I would have preferred it if they had stuck to the classic look.

That might be something that consciously we kind of did, but not to say anything specific – I am not saying anything specific – but, I am hoping people continue to comment, and I will continue to follow the fan comments and reactions to the trailer. They've always liked Link to be someone that the player can imagine being. So maybe you get to choose the gender here.

Who knows, but the graphics are awesome.
