3DS on the Wii U?

Once upon a time when the Wii U was first announced and rumors were going around, I remember hearing that we would be able to use the 3DS on the Wii U. I assume like a controller. I realize the Wii U controller is sorta like the 3DS, but it would be cool if we could use it as a second controller or something. Did anything ever come of it?

Nintendo pretty much only said that they would like to have 3DS and Wii U connectivity in the future...unfortunately they never really made it clear as to in what capacity it would be used in.
