#258643 Rubin: "Nintendo Is Irrelevant As A Hardware Manufacturer In The Console...

Posted by Arkhandar on 02 December 2013 - 04:08 PM

Thats fine and dandy, but not what you said. You said 'He is not wrong'. When youve made it very clear in just this post, you think he is very, very, wrong. You simply agreed with a blurb taken out of context. Again, I bring up my point. Dont blindly agree with people if you never bothered to find out what you are agreeing with. The entire podcast is nothing short of self serving pr for his mobile games company. Disgusting shilling at its most blatant.

Although, I do strongly disagree with your actual intended statement.

The WII U may be on a path to gamecube-esque irrelevence, but that is very, VERY different from nintendo being on a path to irrellevance. If Nintendo was on a path to irrelevance, they wouldnt be constantly besieged and attacked, and constantly have every move watched with an eagle eye. Thats what a company does to something they are frightened of, not one that is becoming irrelevant.

I'll keep that for future reference, thank you. It's true that I never bothered to read his entire statements, but I trust what you say is true and honestly, I would expect nothing else from the man that destroyed THQ.

About Nintendo though, sure, it'll will always be "relevant" dead or alive, since it's the only company in the industry that people actually care about. Proof of that is the fact that the when the 3DS wasn't selling a dime it was covered by every news site, yet when the Vita turns into the same situation, nobody notices. The difference? People care about Nintendo. And like I said, Nintendo will always be relevant, but I much prefer a relevant health company rather than one struggling to sell their own products (I'm talking about the Wii U here; the handheld market shrinked but it's still a big one ,and the 3DS is doing well). It all depends on what you want them to be relevant for.

#258169 What do you expect from Nintendo in 2020?

Posted by Arkhandar on 28 November 2013 - 03:56 PM

If Iwata's still there, he will probably try to acquire Namco Bandai (again, like back in 2003) to expand Nintendo's IPs to the entertainment and merchandise market. Imagine instead of the Bandai Channel, having an high quality Nintendo Channel worldwide, with beautifully crafted animated series and other shows.  Making already strong IPs even stronger.

Nintendo education tablets and audio guides for museums should also be mainstream by then. It's a great marketing strategy to cater new costumer, especially in the educational scene.

As for gaming, business as usual I suppose. Nintendo wants two consoles, so they'll have two consoles (which is a good thing). But I image that by then, we will have the same look for handhelds and home console: same OS, shared accounts, shared Virtual Console, video chat to Nintendo consoles and smart devices, and all of that. Maybe a Nintendo TVii box, you never know.

There's so much room to expand even further, the sky's the limit. Leave luck to heaven. ;)

What do you think...

Looks sweet doesnt it! I wish Nintendo could see it and it could give them some ideas for there next gen console, because Wii U, PS4 and Xbox one are now current gen!

A Microsoft Office retail box. No, thank you?

I like the Wii name

Me too, and so does my mother. She even thinks that Wii U is a "happy" name. Signs of a turning point on consumer awareness? :P

#255316 PS4 to suffer same fate as wii u

Posted by Arkhandar on 09 November 2013 - 02:09 PM

I never said to assume 1.5. I said to assume 1.0, but I suspect it may have been closer to 1.5.

Remember, it's 9 games per system, which in a 6 year lifespan equates into 1.5 games per year (per system).

#255139 PS4 to suffer same fate as wii u

Posted by Arkhandar on 08 November 2013 - 01:03 PM

The Wii U was in no way a hit during any season.

I fully expect the PS4 to sell close to 3 million during the holiday season. Even with Xbox competition.

There was very little buzz in comparison for the Wii U.

To me it is simply a case of Sony having the interest of the gaming community. Nintendo has not been taken seriously by gamers for a long time. I don't care about 100 million units of the Wii. Yes. Great accomplishment. But that will not be repeated again. Think howmany of then were dust collectors after the fad of waggle controls wore out. Lack of 3rd party support stems from this.

It sold 3.5 million units during the holiday season. Sure it had little buzz, but how is that not a hit?

Now, let's talk about the so called "dust collector".

In its six year life cycle the Wii sold around 100 million units and around 900 million software units, which equates into approximately 9 games per system adoption rate, or 1.5 games per year.

In its seven year life cycle the PS3 sold around 80 million units and around 754 million software units, which equates into approximately 9.4 games per system adoption rate or  1.3 games per year.

In its eight year life cycle the Xbox 360 sold around 80 million units and around 829 million software units, which equates into approximately 10.4 games per system adoption rate or 1.3 games per year.

You could argue that the Wii didn't bring much interest to you in terms of its software library, but if you call that a dust collector, you're just being dumb.

And no third-party support? I suggest you take a good look at this: http://www.gengame.n...mproved-on-wii/

It's funny how the media can simply destroy the image of a console by making bold assumptions out of thin air, with no factual evidence supporting such claims. The Wii died prematurely compered to the HD twins because the media destroyed its image. Soon enough, publisher trust went down and so did support, sales and popularity. Nintendo just gave it the final blow in 2011 by just having Skyward Sword in the pipeline. They abandoned the system, which they had no other option but to do so in order to support the 3DS and prepare for the Wii U. Understaffed Nintendo is understaffed x)

I think about it this way: take ten minutes to look at sales history in the past 15-20 years and see the trend going on. Or, barring that, do this simple equation: as good as you WANT the launch year to be, subtract a lot of positive expectations and prepare for the worst. Why? Because that's what happens EVERY. SINGLE. LAUNCH YEAR.

Exactly. Launch sales are all fun and games until you realize there's little to no quality games in the short-term pipeline. It's always been like this, except this generation it feels that the gap between launch and the arrival of great quality games is even bigger. Maybe it's because there are less and less publishers in the industry, or maybe its because games take too much time to make right now, I don't know. Nevertheless, truth be said that the real test for a system is whether it can regain momentum or not, once the must-haves start flooding in (in which the Vita failed miserably and the Wii U is currently in purgatory).

#254915 PS4 to suffer same fate as wii u

Posted by Arkhandar on 07 November 2013 - 08:58 AM

No one here is going to lIsten to that!

A few months ago I made the prediction PS4 would surpass Wii U saled by the ends of March.

I was called crazy (but in a nice way).

For some reason people do not want to believe there is actual excitement for this coming system that just wasn't there for the Wii U.

So to the original topic, there is no easy the PS4 won't be a hit this holiday season.

The Wii U was a hit during the holiday season too (just below the 2006 Wii levels), and look at it now.

My point is that launch hype is a great way to start off, and I'm sure it will sell tons of systems. However, you guys have to ask yourselves this question, will Sony be able to keep that momentum, considering the post-launch drought, lack of innovation and absence of top-tier exclusive titles? I doubt that.

The whole situation just sounds too Wii U-ish and Vita-ish to me. We'll see.

#254102 firmware update bigger than 8 GB in future

Posted by Arkhandar on 01 November 2013 - 07:57 AM

Even if it got to a point that the OS would absolutely require to be bigger than 8 GB, I think there would be a lot of areas where Nintendo could cut some corners.

Asset reutilization is an example on how to free up some space, which Nintendo simply ignored by making a ton different button images with the exact same pupose for every single system app they've developed. Having two friend lists is also something that goes beyond common sense.

Then again, the OS is a complete mess, so no wonder it occupies 5 GB of space.

Not really, even the ps4 version is near identical looking to the 360 version.

It's funny how every AC4 video you get top comments saying that "the next-gen versions look bad because of youtube".

Well, someone's going to be disappointing.

#253793 Wii U OS Redesign Concept

Posted by Arkhandar on 30 October 2013 - 10:38 AM

Arkhandar, I hope you don't mind me borrowing your idea for tabs at the bottom - brilliant idea by the way.

No problem. I'm glad you guys like the tabs idea. :)

And thanks for showing your own mockups. You usually do some great stuff in photoshop so I was really curious myself to see what did you have next. I have to say, I'm not disappointed. xD

I was planning on stop making more mockups for now since there wasn't much interest in the community, but now that you've also contributed I'm pumped up again.

#253292 Wii U OS Redesign Concept

Posted by Arkhandar on 27 October 2013 - 08:27 AM

That looks really awesome, and definitely a big improvement over the current apps. But I can see a technical limitation getting in the way: That's effectively a fast task-switch toolbar at the bottom, which would be ideal if the console could instantly load in Miiverse or whatever. but the Wii U currently has a pretty long loading screen for each app, so a major rewrite of the core os would be needed otherwise the task bar would be odd.

You're right. With the current load times, the task bar would be useless.. unless we return to the original idea of making a "Preview Mode" to more "heavy" system apps, such as Miiverse, Nintendo eShop, Nintendo TVii, and System Settings (which would require to close the suspended app). This way, the Notification Center and Daily Log apps would be instantly swap-able, and the Internet Browser wouldn't require a Preview Mode so it could launch directly.

Something like this:

New HOME Menu

wii_u_os_redesign_concept___home_menu_by

I was thinking of making the pop-up bar clickable (maybe a larger icon in the left corner to make it easier), which would bring up essentially a history of all notifications, kind of like the Blackberry Hub:

All notifications (new and viewed) would show up on this list, and you can click on a notification to open the respective app and view/do more. Does that make any sense?

That's a good idea, but I don't think that would work very well during gameplay. My vision is that the notification pop-up would be clickacle like you said, but instead it would launch the the app that its referring to (in this case, the Miiverse post). For the list of all notifications by date (and time) the user would have to click the Home button and go to the "Notifications" tab. This way, everything is in one place and it doesn't distract the user too much from gameplay. :)

Miiverse (Preview Mode)
