#274374 Gunslingers ~ The Nintendo Wii U Clan for Adults.

Posted by McMurphy on 23 February 2014 - 09:47 PM

The 2014 Winter Olympics are over. I don't know about the rest of you, but I was glued to the television (or internet feeds) during the entire event. Just like living it up in game, the Gunslingers forums and chats were full of GS members from Finland, Australia, Norway, Denmark, United States, Canada, Scotland, England, and several other regions of the globe discussing the Olympics. Amazingly enough, it done with good cheer, mutual respect, and laughter.

Case in point: During the hours of a particular Frosty Pints (i.e.: the community-wide celebration of the weekend with drinks and online matches), GS*Sosyc posted the following animated image in the forums:

And that is what a gaming clan should be about. Good times. Leave the competitive drama and stat boosting for the other groups. Rather, it is about having fun on your own terms and on your own schedule. It is about laughing. It is about comradery between friends, new and old, regardless of what nation you hail from.

You are invited to join the Gunslingers.

The Mario Kart 8 Clan for Adults.
The Nintendo Wii U Clan for Adults.

Gunslingers - Blazing Trails for Parent and Hard Working Adult Gamers Since 2007.

#254661 What music are you listening to at the moment?

I have been immensely enjoying Pearl Jam's new album Lightning Bolt. The singles from the album are great, but personal favorite track is "Pendulum".

#251382 31 year old woman poses as teen to have sex with a 14 year old boy.

I don't think you understand how sexual abuse works, do you?

Exactly. This subject matter is a bit dark for a Wii U community. Besides, judging by some of the initial responses, many of the members may be too young to fully appreciate how terrible of a story it is.

#250810 Chat petition

Posted by McMurphy on 10 October 2013 - 12:03 PM

Well, I think there are two arguments being made here:

1.) No chat because of technical commitment. If the person responsible for the tech support side of the site doesn't want install a chat, then there isn't going to be an official chat. Simple as that.

Now, if the issue is side-stepping that avenue, there are free alternatives that are fairly decent. Trust me, I am ALL about doing things cheap. For example, there is Chatango group chats, which can be quite easily embedded anywhere in the forums and very flexible in regards to resizing and customizing color schemes. Its moderation tools, which are simplistic, include reviewing chat history, banning usernames and IPs, and assembling a moderation team.

The pros: Very flexible, free,  and it can be given a title with the promotion link description so, if any should embed it elsewhere, it will always advertise this site.

The cons: The chat won't be tied into the forum's user database. So, if it is a concern of banning someone from the forums AND the chat, those are two different acts.

I use a free chat program on my site, but it serves a different type of community. This addresses an unofficial desire to make a www.thewiiu.com chat center rather than something more official appearing, which will involve tech administration. Of course, if you are someone who wants the moderation staff to front money and the time to attempt to get past the wishes of the site owner/technician, then I do believe that is a display of unwarranted entitlement.

2.) No chat because of time commitment. From all the comments made by Mournblade in this and other chat related topics, this concern is the real reason there isn't a chat. And it is a very valid one. Sure, it doesn't seem like a big deal to maintain a chat, but the moderation of it (assuming you want a chat that actually demands some dignity being displayed by its users) can be an immense task. It is also largely thankless task because a moderator often gets treated like a bad guy in the whole affair. Can a chat be maintained properly? Yes, of course. A properly maintained chat could most certainly be at thewiiu.com, but it demands time...time that someone (and most likely a team of someones) has to put in for free. Since the site isn't an utility, expecting people to undertake a whole set of headaches for free because of our collective whim is unfair.

#243609 GameSpot Says Wii U Version Of Rayman Legends Is Worst Version

Posted by McMurphy on 02 September 2013 - 08:59 AM

This IS Gamespot, after all. I am not sure how much credibility they still wield with gamers after giving The Last of Us an "8"....far below the rest of the reviewing community. Also, check out the Gamespot reviewer profiles sometime. They take trolling popular games as a badge of honor by saying things like, "Hates all the games you love" and other gems that have no place being expressed by "professionals."

#235567 Can something be done about all the damn spambots?

Posted by McMurphy on 28 July 2013 - 11:15 AM

I don't know. Every time I visit here, I haven't actually come across spambots. They seem to be wrangled rather quickly, and, as it has been suggested prior in this discussion, a few spambots sneaking their way in not a big deal.

I think people are not taking in account that there is no lasting defense against spambots. Forum administrators are forced to continuously update their defenses. What was once a perfect solution one year is cracked the following. For example, my community had its six year anniversary last June. To celebrate, I thought it would be fun to return the forums to how they appeared years ago for a weekend. With the first half of an hour of the rollback, I had fifty spambots flood the forum...and that isn't even counting the ones that simply registered an account and hadn't responded to the verifying email. Naturally, I scrapped that idea!

In other words, it seems like the spam counter-measures here are up to date, and the staff is doing an excellent job removing the handful of knuckleheads that slip through the cracks in a reasonable span of time.

#216410 Nintendo said my ID was inappropriate so I had to delete it

Posted by McMurphy on 05 June 2013 - 10:30 PM

I got a email saying my user ID was inappropriate so the ID was blocked for other users to see. This was 2 weeks after having it ID was STDVirus!

Really? Are you really that surprised that it was deleted? I mean, why did you pick it in the first place? Was it because it was controversial, or was it because of personal status?

I applaud Nintendo and its foresight to know that the parent of their ten year old shouldn't see a message left in the Super Mario Bros U progress Miiverse feature by a "STDVirus."

#210898 x86 = Nintendo's Doom?

Posted by McMurphy on 24 May 2013 - 11:26 AM

Admittedly, there are a lot of market indicators that should make Nintendo worried, but, after hearing "Nintendo is dead" since the N64 days, they don't carry much weight for me.

Also, in regards to a refocus on Xbox One siren sounding, don't worry. If people thought that the consumer base response to the Wii U's initial presentation was bad, that is nothing compared to the ugly mess that is going on after Microsoft's conference this week.

#204831 Any plans for a Wii U 007?

Posted by McMurphy on 07 May 2013 - 12:03 PM

I wouldn't hold my breath about seeing a Wii U remake of GoldenEye any time soon. The developer, Eurocom, of both the Wii's GoldenEye and the Wii U's 007 Legends closed shop last year. In the very best scenario, another James Bond related title has been quite delayed.

It would by fantastic if RARE did another Bond game. Unfortunately, Nintendo and RARE had quite a contractual falling out back on the Nintendo 64, which is why we didn't see GoldenEye 007 (N64 version), Perfect Dark, and Conker's Bad Fur Day available on the Wii's Virtual Console while the latter two examples are available on the Xbox360's Marketplace.

#201198 Wii U or iPhone 5?

Posted by McMurphy on 28 April 2013 - 12:10 PM

This question doesn't make any sense. All I know is, if I had decided my birthday gift was going to be between two such high-priced items as a kid, it would only be met with laughter from my parents.

Not that I am still bitter about the whole Voltron incident....

#200149 Virtual Console Question

Posted by McMurphy on 25 April 2013 - 09:33 PM

The virtual console additions were not part of today's system updates. The Virtual Console portion will go live tomorrow.

Check the 18:50 minute mark of 4/17/13's video edition of Nintendo Direct for reference.

#196999 routerbad, 3Dude help the SEGA forums please!

Posted by McMurphy on 19 April 2013 - 02:34 PM

There's alot of doubtful Nintendo fans who are being constantly tormented by PS360 players on the Official SEGA forums who need help from tech wise Nintendo fans like, routerbad 3Dude and Plutonas to school the haters and renew hope in the Wii U there, Please help them guys!

I don't think providing fodder or conducting response trolling is the solution. If the official SEGA forums, a community set up to augment sales, is unwilling or unable to moderate their boards properly, shame on them.

#195544 Resident Evil Revelations Miiverse Features

Posted by McMurphy on 16 April 2013 - 02:11 PM

That's great! I was initially a bit disappointed to hear that the console remake was not a Wii U exclusive, so the Miiverse features are enough to convince me that my pre-order is worth keeping.

#195523 Monster Hunter Update Coming April 16th

Posted by McMurphy on 16 April 2013 - 01:53 PM

I am all for being able to play the game via the gamepad. Granted, I will always prefer having a nice sized television to do the bulk of the gaming on, but with a game like Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate that demands a good chunk of time invested into it, having the option to continue playing via the gamepad anywhere in my apartment will help matters greatly.
