Laying flat, but raised up off the shelf on small rubber or cork pads (i'll have to make) a little, so gets good air flow all around it (even under it)
I hear voices in my head all the time, telling me what to do. But I just ignore them and carry on killing.

Won't know until I see both in person however if it's better for it to lay flat then it will lay flat

It'll be laying down. If the Wii was too tall to stand up, I'm sure the WiiU will too.

Some people always have a cellphone on them. I'm so awesome I always have a 3DS.

Well I have an A/V rack with glass shelves. Everything on it lays flat at the moment. The PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, Mac Mini etc. The Wii U will probably just replace the Wii which will probably go downstairs in the family room. So yes mine will lay flat.

I never stand my consoles on their side simply because it could tip over easily if accidently bumped.

Up would be cool but cooling and scratching worries me. So I'll probably end up laying it flat. Although if I find the stands that come with the deluxe bundle sturdy enough I might give up a go.

Having it flat is also good for the air flow I believe.

Down. I have my Wii upright, but I don't think I'm gonna be a huge fan of the stands you have to stick on the Wii U for it to be upright.

I feel it's soo much safer for a console to be on its side, it's stable, safer, can't be jolted easily, and accidents can happen way less

I have my Wii standing up due to space. But I'll have my Wii U sitting horizontal since it will not tip over ( I'm putting it somewhere where nothing will break it's fall if it tips over), plus I heard it's better for the disc and how the console reads it.

Hello everyone, I was just wondering how is everyone setting up their new Wii U's?? I picked up the Deluxe version but am undecided should I stand it up or lay it down?? At the moment I am using the extra 2 legs that came with the Deluxe version and have the Wii U standing up.. Is standing up good, bad?? What are you guys doing with yours??

I have paranoia of leaving it standing up because of fear that the disk might fall inside the console and stuff like that. ._.

I always figured that keeping optical drives laid down reduces the wear and tear on the spindle motor. The same applies to hard drives although I believe its less of a problem as due to the much higher speeds they run at, they have to be built to handle greater stresses anyway.

When laid down the disc spins more evenly than when its vertical and gravity is pulling downwards. It is my understanding that this causes the spindle motors sleeve/bearings to wear at an angle so it will eventually start to vibrate more or potentially fail completely.

Also it should actually keep the console cooler as any heat that rises away from the heatsink is heading along the air path from the fan or the top of the case, but on its side some heat will be rising off the heatsink into parts of the console that doesn't have airflow. That is why it will FEEL like the console is cooler on its side, because the heat is staying inside the console rather than rising to the outer case.

Bear in mind I have owned a 360 since not long after launch and it was almost 2 years before it got the RROD. That to me is pretty good evidence that my logic is sound as I know people who keep their consoles vertical, and every one has failed, been repaired and failed again. My console has also never scratched a disc.
