#189152 Wii U won't be getting Unreal Engine 4

Posted by routerbad on 02 April 2013 - 06:36 AM

I think you're severely downplaying the PS4 hardware and talking up the Wii U hardware just a bit there. The first PS4 demos are already showing a noticeable increase in polygon counts, effects as well as much more subtle lighting and shadowing...and the games that are about to be shown at E3 are also looking mighty impressive.

The increase in fidelity will likely be very apparent from the get go this generation because I think that a lot of UE4 PC development is going to scale nicely down to PS4/720 games while the Wii U will be getting UE3 games that look like prettier versions of current generation games.

I'll agree that the Wii U might not get a fair showing for a long time as it's looking like no third party is going to really push the hardware anytime soon, but that's no reason to not give the PS4 credit for being an impressive piece of kit.

Really?  A noticeable increase in polygon counts?  Right there I can tell that you are either being completely disingenuous on purpose (lying to make a point) or you really have no idea what you're looking at.  There was no noticeable increase in poly count in anything that was live rendered at the reveal, and "more subtle lighting and shadowing" or SSAO, can also be done on the Wii U.

I'm afraid any supposed increase in fidelity won't show through as well as you think it will.  The PS4 can't handle the main draw of UE4 anyway, and the only reason it won't be created for Wii U isn't for lack of power, they don't want to make an engine for the only Power ISA based console, that is all.  They'll eventually bring it to Wii U, just not up front.

The PS4 is an impressive piece of kit, and it will do great things, but there are too many people overhyping and overstating it's capability rather than being realistic about what it will do, which is marginally better than the other consoles this generation.  That's it, it will not be some mind blowing difference in fidelity between the Wii U and PS4, and all of the advanced rendering techniques are present on both.  Sure the PS4 has a nice GPU, but what it will amount to in game over and above what Wii U or the 720 (also supposedly has a "weak" GPU) is very little to none.

Will they announce new games though? New Pokemon X/Y footage?

No idea.

They may or they may not. I expect an Animal Crossing: New Leaf trailer + release date.

#169464 Rayman legends, For or Against?

Posted by Socalmuscle on 09 February 2013 - 09:40 PM

No support for the game. Great game.
But that's not what this is about.
It's a bully tactic from a third party Nintendo has heavily partnered with.
In short, it's a betrayal by ubi to Nintendo.

They complain about install base and then do nothing to contribute. Even though it's in their power. Not only have they already spent the money to make the game, it's complete. Yet they go back on their word in terms of release. The wii u did have a certain emphasis put on this particular game as a selling point.

Can't support that.

And after the next Mario is shown, I doubt snyone wants Raymsn. They missed out on a golden opportunity and made Nintendo and gamers pay for something that neither has done wrong.

#169148 Gamestop: Anti-used games could cripple 720 sales (no sh!t)

Posted by PedanticGamer on 09 February 2013 - 07:35 AM

Game developers to Gamespot: "your overly aggressive selling of used games could cripple our ability to make games".

Really I actually blame companies like Gamespot/EB Games more then Microsoft for this, I can't try and buy a new game from one of there stores without them trying to sell me the second hand copy instead (though I have now stopped shopping at there stores). Gamespot/EB Games along with others have been pushing the game industry into a corner through there practices and expected no ramifications.

#168183 Even Rayman Legends Creator Protesting Wii U Delay

Posted by BobbyRiddle on 07 February 2013 - 09:07 AM

The delay is the biggest kick in the groin of all.  This coming from the publisher whose last Rayman game, Rayman Origins, has barely cracked 2 million on all platforms including handhelds.....2 frickin' million.  I would bet that they would sell 500k on the WiiU in the time between March and September had they released on schedule.  Something really smells rotten here

#158506 How the Wii U will handle against the new Consoles?

Posted by 3Dude on 11 January 2013 - 06:41 AM

I meant are you actually experienced developing with the Wii U hardware, or are you sharing things that you've read from elsewhere?

Your question was answered completely, I will not divulge specifics, and i already told you why.

As much as I'd like to go down the road that my wii u is more powerful than it is I see little point when reality and the facts state something else. If you want to make statements about the hardware you need to be specific.
I don't remember anyone criticising the 360 for its cpu at the time. It was massively powerful back then and a huge improvement on the previous generation. When you add a statement like that to your response do you not realise you come across as some sort of demented fanboy out of touch with reality.
Understand that actual performance of the wii u and what actual developers are stating will be used by most people to understand the wii u performance not fanboy posts in forums.

Of course you dont. This is real information from developers conferences, from a real panel and a real lecture. Not the garbage perpetrated by the clueless game media. The only way to get this information is to have BEEN THERE, or to read a transcript of the sessions recording, BECAUSE THE GAMEZ MEDIA DOESNT COVER REAL NEWS.

It also wouldnt surprise me if the names Warren Spector, Brenda Laurel, Jason Della
Rocca, Greg Costikyan, or Chris Hecker mean nothing to you.

Heres a snippet from Hecker breaking his nda in an epic, and never mentioned by the media, rant about the 360.

"It pains me to say this but I recently just took
a job at EA. However, I worked for Will on
the game you just saw, so.. [laughter] I’m
going to rant about How Sony And Microsoft
Are About To Screw Your Game Design.
Look, how are we going to get where
gameplay, graphics and physics are all
evenly well balanced? At the moment we’re
the 120lb weakling, except nowadays his
right arm here, graphics, is enormous.
So, as you know, graphics and physics grind
on large homogenous floating point data
structures in a very straight-line structured
way. Then we have AI and gameplay code.
Lots of exceptions, tunable parameters,
indirections and often messy. We hate this
code, it’s a mess, but this is the code that
makes the game DIFFERENT. Here is the
terrifying realization about the next
generation consoles: I’m about to break a
ton of NDAs here, oh well, haha, I never
signed them anyway.
Gameplay code will get slower and harder to
write on the next generation of consoles.
Modern CPUs use out-of-order execution,
which is there to make crappy code run fast.
This was really good for the industry when it
happened, although it annoyed many
assembly language wizards in Sweden.
Xenon and Cell are both in-order chips.
What does this mean? It’s cheaper for them
to do this. They can drop a lot of cores. One
out-of-order core is about four times [ did I
catch that right? Alice ]  the size of an in-
order core. What does this do to our code?
It’s great for grinding on floating point, but
for anything else it totally sucks. Rumours
from people actually working on these chips
– straight-line runs 1/3 to 1/10th the
performance at the same clock speed. This
sucks."

#154207 Time to stop the spam and nonsense

If more people reported stuff then the moderators would do their job more efficiently. The problem is that moderators can't be on 24/7 and by the time they're online the spam is already pages away.

This site has been filled with more spam since the Wii U launched, I agree with you. Proper warnings and punishments should handled out to those who continue to break rules without care. It makes the site look unprofessional.

#153862 Wii U - A massive disappointment?

Posted by Desert Punk on 30 December 2012 - 04:31 AM

There were a lot of forum comments going about prior to launch at how the wii u was a next gen system and super powerful and would compete with the next playstation and xbox but this was never going to happen. Unfortunately because of these fanboy posts many people's expectations were un-realistically raised and there are numerous posts all over the internet with people disappointed with what the wii u  is offering.

You buy a Nintendo console if you love Nintendo games and the type of games than Nintendo consoles get mainly. The wii u is a brilliant package overall and I'm really enjoying mine. The gamepad introduces a new direction in gaming just like the wii motion controller did.

If you want a powerful gaming system don't bother with a console get a PC which offers a lot more tech for your buck.

I own a PS3 and 360 as well as wii u and can see the appeal of all 3. Remember the wii launched with a spec inferior to the original xbox but still went on to massive success because it never competed in the same area and appealed to different consumers.

#155199 Miyamoto says pikmin 3 to be more like pikmin 1

Posted by FineLerv on 02 January 2013 - 09:01 AM

I loved the feeling of impending doom that the first Pikmin had. I understand that those sorts of game design choices tend to be frowned upon by the broader gaming community and the critics alike, but the time limit was a big part of the original game for me. When they removed it, I felt like they had severed a perfectly functional limb. If they want to keep it out of the game then at least give me the option to leave it on.

Let's face it, the original Pikmin wasn't challenging but the fact that the pressure was always on to make the most of your time made the game more intense.
